Bulldog Men's Soccer Blanks Occidental, 7-0

Despite the wet and slippery conditions, the University of Redlands men’s soccer team shut out the visiting Tigers of Occidental College on Saturday by a score of 7-0. The Bulldogs doubled their total goals on the season with today’s offensive onslaught, gaining scores from five different players.

Redlands opened the scoring in the 10th minute as junior midfielder Bryan Fakkema (Oak Harbor, WA) put a free kick into the far left corner of the net. Junior midfielder Steve Chenes (Las Vegas, NV) provided back-to-back goals within a 42-second span, gaining assists from sophomore defender Jeff Willey (Medina, WA) and junior forward Ross Schunk (Portland, OR). During the second half, the Bulldogs then gained three goals in nine minutes as Schunk earned two and senior midfielder Max Bowman (Pa’auilo, HI) put away one. Junior forward Alex Parker (Chula Vista, CA), Bowman and Schunk provided the assists. Sophomore midfielder Colin Corey (Beaverton, OR) rounded out the scoring with his first career goal, as sophomore midfielder Will Kelly (Seattle, WA) offered the assist.

The Bulldogs earned 26 shots, including 13 on goal, as the defense held the Tigers to only four shots. Senior goalkeeper Andy Roraff (Highland, CA) made one save in nearly 64 minutes of duty. Senior Tyler Yates (Chico, CA) patrolled the goal for the final 26 minutes of action. For Occidental, freshman Ian Powell (Stanford, CA) provided three saves during the first half while junior Alex Combs (Arcadia, CA) made two stops during the second.

The Bulldogs (5-2, 3-1 SCIAC) face Chapman University on Monday at 7 p.m. in a non-conference match at Farquhar Field. Occidental (3-4, 2-2 SCIAC) travels to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
