The University of Redlands volleyball team faced off against the
No. 3 Leopards of the University of La Verne on Friday night,
suffering a sweep (13-25, 17-25, 22-25) during “Spike Out
Breast Cancer Night” in Currier Gym.
The Bulldogs started off slowly and struggled to gain any momentum
until the third game, when they jumped out to an early lead. The
Leopards rallied back to tie the score at 22 and eventually
captured the victory.
Redlands looked to sophomore middle blocker Megan Phillips (Chula
Vista, CA) and junior outside hitter Ali Massei (San Carlos, CA) to
lead the offense with seven kills each. Freshman setter Allison
Light (Wildomar, CA) dished out 22 assists and added four kills.
Sophomore libero Chelsea Arcaris (Vista, CA) posted 11 digs to lead
the team.
For La Verne (18-2, 9-0 SCIAC), junior middle blocker Crista Jones
(Fresno, CA) tallied a match-high 15 kills with a hitting
percentage of .520. Senior outside hitter Brianna Gonzales
(Whittier, CA) and sophomore opposite hitter Anna Calmer (La Habra,
CA) put away eight kills apiece. Junior setter Yesenia Lopez (West
Covina, CA) supplied a match-high 13 digs to go along with 29
assists.
Redlands (11-12, 5-5 SCIAC) hosts Whittier College in a conference
match on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
