The University of Redlands volleyball team suffered a tough loss
to No. 15 Cal Lutheran University during Senior Night but rallied
to stretch out the match to four games.
After honoring lone senior Dory Baga (Aiea, HI) prior to the match,
the Bulldogs took on the Regals in their final home contest of the
season. Cal Lutheran jumped out to an early lead in game one and
never looked back, nabbing an easy win, 25-14.
In game two, Redlands mounted a valiant comeback that resulted from
solid hitting and tough serving. After tying the score at 13, the
Bulldogs looked to junior Katy Douglass (Roseville, CA) to rattle
off four straight points on her serve to put Redlands ahead, 18-13.
Cal Lu captured one point but Redlands quickly took control again
and gained five consecutive points on junior outside hitter Ali
Massei's (San Carlos, CA) serve. With a comfortable lead, the
Bulldogs earned the 25-18 win off of a kill by freshman middle
blocker Emily Capozzoli (Poway, CA).
In the third game, Cal Lu tied the score at 13 and slowly pulled
away. Redlands rallied back to tie it at 23 but then the Regals
captured back-to-back points for the win. Game four saw much of the
same as Cal Lu simply put more balls away to win by a score of
25-18.
For Redlands, sophomore middle blocker Megan Phillips (Vista, CA)
posted a match-high 13 kills for a .333 hitting percentage while
Massei added 11 kills. Junior setter Kelina Smith (Kurtistown, HI)
dished out 33 assists while sophomore libero Chelsea Arcaris
(Vista, CA) provided a match-high 22 digs.
The Bulldogs (12-14, 6-7 SCIAC) head to Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on
Thursday for their final match of the season.
