The University of Redlands women's volleyball team (5-6,
2-0 SCIAC) extended its record at home this year to 3-0 with wins
over La Sierra University and Occidental College on Sept. 23.
In game one of the doubleheader against La Sierra, the team won
with ease, winning the sets 25-15, 25-17 and 25-7,
respectively.
The Golden Eagles experienced difficulty returning serves from
junior setter Kelina Smith (Kurtistown, HI) as Smith tied for sixth
in program history for service aces in a single match with six.
Sophomore middle blocker Megan Phillips (Vista, CA) led the team
with eight kills, compiling a formidable kill percentage of .417.
While taking on setting duties, freshman setter Allison Light
(Wildomar, CA) compiled a game-high 13 assists while Smith split
time at the setter position, tallying 10.
On defense, senior libero/defensive specialist Dory Baga (Aiea, HI)
led the team with 11 digs.
After a close first set against Occidental, the Bulldogs pulled
away in the second and third sets and took all three by respective
scores of 25-21, 25-11 and 25-14.
Leading the charge for Redlands was sophomore outside hitter Jackie
Hamilton (Loma Linda, CA) with 11 kills. Hamilton racked up a
strong .435 kill percentage against the Tigers.
Light continued to dazzle on setting duties in the second match of
the day, accumulating 21 assists. Baga fortified the Bulldog
defense with 15 digs on the match.
Redlands faces a tough match ahead as it travels to the University
of La Verne to face the No. 3 Leopards in a Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match at 7 p.m.
on Sept. 26.
