Redlands Men's Water Polo Team Goes 3-2 at UCSD Invitational

The University of Redlands men's water polo team, the No. 1 team among Division III schools, turned in a solid showing at the UCSD Invitational, taking three of the five games it played at the tournament from Sept. 6-7.

Junior center Brendan Meaney (Palm Desert, CA) and senior driver Andrew Becskehazy (Miami, FL) led the way for the Bulldogs, scoring 10 goals apiece in the five games. Also bolstering the offense for the Bulldogs was junior utility player Jim Kehrig (Danville, CA) and sophomore defender Andrew Smith-Jones (Annapolis, MD) who scored eight and seven goals, respectively. Senior utility player Buddy Olds (Murrieta, CA) tallied five goals, sophomore center Miran Terzic (Palm Desert, CA) and senior defender Jon Rielly (Vista, CA) each scored on three occasions, junior defender John Floersch (San Jose, CA) recorded two goals and junior utility player Ryan Floersch (San Jose, CA) scored once.

Senior goalkeeper Teddy Trowbridge (Mercer Island, WA) made 27 saves in five games of action while junior goalkeeper Jack Amaral (Porterville, CA) split duty with Trowbridge and picked up eight saves.

Rebounding off of an 0-2 start against UC San Diego and Long Beach State, the Bulldogs fired off three straight wins against Cal Lutheran University, the U.S. Air Force Academy and Cal Baptist University.

Redlands took out the SCIAC-opponent Cal Lutheran University team by a 12-7 score with Olds and Becskehazy scoring three apiece to lead the Bulldogs to victory. Trowbridge notched eight saves on the game, which proved to be his highest total of the five games.

Taking on Air Force, the No. 16-ranked team in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA), proved to be an easier task than usual as the Bulldogs clipped the Falcons by a 13-7 score. Becskehazy led the way with four goals while Trowbridge and Amaral combined for eight saves in goal.

Continuing on with dethroning ranked opponents, the Bulldogs took out No. 17 Cal Baptist by a 13-9 score. Meaney led the Redlands scorers with three goals, and Trowbridge won his third-straight game in goal with seven saves.

Hosting one of the two locations of the Inland Empire Classic this weekend, the Bulldogs will take on Concordia University, Occidental College, the University of the Pacific, Whittier College and Chapman University.
