After 110 minutes of men's soccer action, neither the
University of Redlands nor Cal Lutheran University could trump the
other, and the two squads wound up knotted in a 1-1 tie on Saturday
afternoon in Thousand Oaks.
The Kingsmen struck first 18 minutes into the match when Raul Yepez
lobbed a shot over senior goalkeeper Evan Hobson (San Diego,
CA).
Entering halftime, Cal Lutheran held an 8-7 edge in shots while
Redlands owned a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
After both teams took turns firing shots at the opposing net early
in the second half, junior midfielder John Brookover (Boise, ID)
capitalized on a cross by senior midfielder Will Kelly (Seattle,
WA). After leaving Brookover's foot, the ball ricocheted off
of a Cal Lutheran defender and sailed into the left-hand side of
the goal, giving the Maroon and Gray the equalizing score.
Trying to put the game away, Redlands would shoot eight more shots
before the horn sounded at the 90-minute mark.
In the 95th minute, Kelly had the chance to end the match, but his
attempt clanged off of the left post.
At the contest's end, Redlands held the upper hand in both
shots (29-21) and corner kicks (11-4).
Hobson turned away five scoring attempts in goal for the Bulldogs
while Chris Capellini made seven saves protecting the Kingsmen
net.
Cal Lutheran (7-9-1, 6-5-1 SCIAC) entertains the University of La
Verne on Wednesday at 4 p.m. With the draw, the Kingsmen are tied
for fourth in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (SCIAC) standings.
Redlands (8-6-3, 7-3-2 SCIAC) currently sits in a tie for second
with Whittier College in the SCIAC standings and looks to challenge
the conference's top team, Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, on
Wednesday in Redlands. Game time is set for 7 p.m. on Farquhar
Field. In their first meeting this year on Oct. 3, the Sagehens
scored on a penalty kick in the final minute of regulation to
defeat the Bulldogs, 2-1.
