The University of Redlands men's water polo team fell,
8-11, at the hands of Whittier College on Saturday afternoon in
Whittier.
After the Poets built their lead to 5-2 with 6:38 remaining in the
first half, the Maroon and Gray scored four of the final five goals
before the break to enter halftime with the score tied, 6-6.
A defensive-minded effort from both squads in the third quarter
resulted in just one more goal apiece heading into the final
stanza.
Whittier kicked off the fourth quarter scoring four unanswered
goals, which proved to be the difference in the end. Redlands
scored with just 16 seconds left, narrowing the margin of defeat to
three.
Senior driver Clint Stevenson (South Jordan, UT) and senior center
Ryan Floersch (San Jose, CA) ripped shots into the back of the cage
on two occasions while senior driver Marc Hicks (Granada Hills,
CA), junior driver Tim Hendrickson (Los Altos, CA), senior driver
Erik Grosshans (Oxnard, CA) and senior central defender Ian Starkie
(Arroyo Grande, CA) rounded out the Bulldog scorers.
Tending the net for the Maroon and Gray, senior goalkeeper Teddy
Trowbridge (Mercer Island, WA) turned away 12 shots.
Whittier (11-9, 3-0 SCIAC) travels to Pasadena on Wednesday for a 4
p.m. contest against Caltech.
Redlands (10-15, 2-1 SCIAC), ranked No. 1 in the latest Collegiate
Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Poll, eyes redemption
with a Wednesday match-up against the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer
Colleges. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Claremont.
