The University of Redlands men's soccer team dropped a
heartbreaking 1-2 decision at the hands of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges
in Claremont on Saturday by means of a penalty kick in the final
minute of action.
Wynn Sullivan put the Sagehens up, 1-0, in the 13th minute when he
scored off of a chip by his teammate, Franco Simbana. Sophomore
midfielder Cody Carlson (Burbank, CA) headed in a goal off of a
cross from the feet of senior forward Nick Gundersen (Park City,
UT) just 10 minutes later to knot the tally at one apiece.
Holding an 11-3 halftime advantage in shots, the Bulldogs
controlled the pace of the match and continued to outshoot the
Sagehens throughout the remainder of the competition.
Zach Mirman earned a penalty-kick opportunity at the 89-minute mark
and capitalized on it, ending Redlands' chance to manage a
favorable result on the road.
The Maroon and Gray finished the game with the upper hand in shots
(20-8) and in corner kicks (13-2).
Redlands (4-6-1, 3-3 SCIAC) looks to finish out the first round of
conference play with a winning record when it hosts the University
of La Verne on Wednesday evening on Farquhar Field. Game time is
set for 7 p.m.
