The University of Redlands men's water polo team won two
and lost two at the Claremont Convergence on Friday and Saturday at
the Axelrod Pool on the campus of Claremont McKenna College.
In its first match of the weekend, the Bulldogs walked away with a
12-7 victory over NAIA's Fresno Pacific University. Junior
center Miran Terzic (Mostar, Bosna i Hercegovina) and junior driver
Tim Hendrickson (Los Altos, CA) led the Maroon and Gray in goals
with two while senior driver Brent Dotters (Porterville, CA),
junior center Blake vanHartesvelt (Mercer Island, WA), senior
driver Erik Grosshans (Oxnard, CA), senior center Ryan Floersch
(San Jose, CA), junior driver Bo Sidhu (Indo, CA), senior central
defender John Floersch (San Jose, CA), junior driver Drew Fischer
(Highland, CA) and freshman driver Zach Chierici (Millbrae, CA) all
chipped in with one apiece. In between the pipes, four different
goalkeepers saw action. Senior goalkeeper Jack Amaral (Porterville,
CA) led the quartet with two saves while senior goalkeeper Teddy
Trowbridge (Mercer Island, WA), freshman goalkeeper Jessie Gunther
(Perris, CA) and sophomore goalkeeper Michael Lucey (Benicia, CA)
each notched one stop.
Redlands undertook a tough task in facing No. 14 Concordia
University- Irvine in the second match of the afternoon, falling,
6-9. Grosshans launched two shots into the back of the net while
Terzic, vanHartesvelt, R. Floersch and J. Floersch also tacked on
scores. Trowbridge protected the Bulldog goal, halting five shots
on the contest.
The No. 15 U.S. Air Force Academy (CO) avenged its 0-3 mark against
the Maroon and Gray during the 2008 season with a 12-8 triumph on
Saturday morning. Grosshans netted a hat trick, while Terzic and R.
Floersch kept the offense clicking with two goals apiece. In
addition, Dotters slipped one past the Falcon keeper to spell out
the Bulldogs' final tally. Gunther and Trowbridge split time
in net, collecting four and two saves, respectively.
Finally, the Maroon and Gray bounced back with a 10-8 win over NCAA
Division III rival Johns Hopkins University (MD) in the
team's final tilt of the event. Offensively, R. Floersch
unleashed a troika of goals while Terzic, Grosshans and J. Floersch
each supplied a pair of scores. Additionally, vanHartesvelt also
reached the back of the net. Trowbridge faced a flurry of Blue Jay
shots, posting 12 stops.
Redlands (8-10) faces a challenging slate when it travels to Irvine
this weekend for the two-day UCI Invitational. It contests No. 2 UC
Los Angeles (UCLA) in the first game of the tournament on Saturday
at 8:30 a.m. in the Corona del Mar High School Pool. Depending on
its result, the Maroon and Gray will face either No. 7 Long Beach
State University or the No. 10 U.S. Naval Academy (MD) in its
second matchup of the day. Sunday's schedule is contingent
upon the results from the first two matches.
