In its second match of the day, the University of Redlands
volleyball team cruised past visiting La Sierra University in
straight sets. The Bulldogs utilized 14 players who combined for a
.410 hitting percentage en route to the 25-4, 25-14, 25-6
victory.
Redlands dominated play in the opening stanza as senior setter
Kelina Smith (Kurtistown, HI) served 16 consecutive points. She
tallied seven aces and 21 assists on the night.
The Golden Eagles fought back in the second set and pulled within
four points at 13-17. Solid serving by junior middle blocker Megan
Phillips (Vista, CA), who added three aces in the match, put the
Bulldogs back on track for the win.
The Maroon and Gray returned to its dominating ways in the third
set, earning 25 points in the team's first go-around of
serving. Redlands jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never looked
back.
Overall, junior outside hitter Jackie Hamilton (Loma Linda, CA) led
the Bulldogs with six kills on eight attacks for a hitting
percentage of .625. Senior outside hitter (San Carlos, CA) Ali
Massei provided a repeat performance from earlier in the day,
knocking down five of her seven attempts for a .714 mark. Freshman
right side hitter Dominique Atherley (Bainbridge Island, WA) posted
a .429 hitting percentage with four kills.
Senior libero Lauren Harding (Altadena, CA) posted a match-high 12
digs for the Bulldogs.
Redlands (5-2) opens Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (SCIAC) competition on Tuesday, September 22, with a
7:30 p.m. match at Cal Lutheran University. The Bulldogs return
home on Friday, September 25, to face the Athenas of
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges at 7:30 p.m.
