The University of Redlands men's water polo team compiled
a 2-2 record at the Bronco Invite in Santa Clara on Saturday and
Sunday, defeating Cal Lutheran University and Whittier College
while losing to No. 15 UC Davis and No. 10 Santa Clara
University.
An eight-goal second quarter lifted the Bulldogs past a potent
Whittier offense in the team's first game of the invitational
as the Maroon and Gray prevailed, 14-11. Senior driver Erik
Grosshans (Oxnard, CA) led Redlands with four goals while senior
center Ryan Floersch (San Jose, CA) and senior driver Marc Hicks
(Granada Hills, CA) offered two apiece. In addition, senior driver
Clint Stevenson (South Jordan, UT), junior center Miran Terzic
(Mostar, Bosna i Hercegovina), senior driver Taylor Swyers (St.
Louis, MO), senior driver Brent Dotters (Porterville, CA),
sophomore driver Jeff Parsons (Newark, CA) and senior center Ben
Taylor (Porterville, CA) contributed one score apiece. Both senior
goalkeeper Teddy Trowbridge (Mercer Island, WA) and freshman
goalkeeper Jessie Gunther (Perris, CA) patrolled the Bulldog net,
tallying six and two saves, respectively.
Despite falling in a 1-5 hole after the first half, the Bulldogs
mounted a comeback against nationally-ranked UC Davis. The rally
fell just short, however, as the Aggies bested the Maroon and Gray,
8-6, in a low-scoring affair. Hicks and Grosshans supplied two
goals apiece while sophomore driver Cabot Ferrill (Poway, CA) and
senior central defender Ian Starkie (Arroyo Grande, CA) each found
the back of the net once. Head Coach Tom Whittemore utilized two
goalkeepers, Gunther and Trowbridge, and the duo combined for six
saves on the afternoon.
The host squad matched up with Redlands in the first tilt of the
second day, and the Broncos built up an early lead to cruise to a
13-9 victory. Terzic, Grosshans and J. Floersch paced the Bulldog
attack with two goals apiece while Dotters, freshman driver Zac
Chierici (Millbrae, CA) and R. Floersch each beat out the Santa
Clara keeper once. Trowbridge played the entirety of the contest in
between the posts for the Maroon and Gray, stopping seven
shots.
Finally, the team downed Cal Lutheran in its event finale, 15-10.
Redlands either equaled or bettered the Kingsmen's scoring
output throughout each frame, and four Bulldogs recorded at least
two goals. R. Floersch netted a hat trick while junior center Blake
vanHartesvelt (Mercer Island, WA), Terzic and Chierici each
contributed a pair of scores. Others that scored for the Maroon and
Gray were Hicks, Dotters, Parsons, Grosshans, Starkie and senior
central defender John Floersch (San Jose, CA). Trowbridge earned
the win between the pipes, halting one shot.
Redlands (6-8) travels west to Claremont this Friday for the annual
two-day Claremont Convergence. The Maroon and Gray squares off
against Fresno Pacific University in its first game of the
invitational at 10 a.m. All four matchups involving the Bulldogs
will be played at the Axelrod Pool on the campus of Claremont
McKenna College.
