Box Score The University of Redlands football team rattled off 20 unanswered points en route to a 27-7 victory over the Leopards of the University of La Verne at Ortmayer Stadium in Saturday's Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game. This marked the third straight game in which the Bulldogs allowed only seven points by their opponents.
Midway through the first quarter, sophomore linebacker Jordan Garcia (Carlsbad, CA) nabbed a junior quarterback Thomas Arguello (Richmond, CA) pass for a 30-yard return that set up the Bulldogs' first score. Two plays and a ULV penalty later, junior running back Tyson Moll (Bountiful, UT) rushed the ball for two yards into the La Verne end zone for his second touchdown of the season. Senior kicker Joe MacMillan (Pasadena, CA) nailed the point-after try to make it 7-0.
However, the Leopards quickly answered as Arguello erased his interception with a 69-yard scoring run on the ensuing possession.
But this was all that Redlands allowed as it countered with 20 straight points, which included field goals by MacMillan from 32 and 25 yards out, while prohibiting any red-zone chances for the Leopards.
Beyond the field goals, the Bulldogs gained a pick-six play from junior defensive back Vince Aiello (Fullerton, CA), who made his first interception grab of the season with a 29-yard return to the promise land late in the first quarter.
Finally, Redlands capped off its scoring spree with a five-yard strike by senior quarterback Dan Selway (Villa Park, CA) to his top target in senior wide receiver Evan Reuter (Cameron Park, CA) late in the fourth quarter. During this drive, Selway marched the Bulldogs 60 yards on eight plays, which included a 20-yard catch by junior wide receiver Tyler Aubrey (San Diego, CA) to put them in the ULV red zone.
Overall, the Maroon and Gray gained 277 yards of total offense, which were highlighted by Reuter's seven receptions for 90 yards. Going 18-for-31, Selway found eight different receivers with juniors Andrew Romero (West Covina, CA) and Kyle Romero (Santee, CA) each making just one catch but for 48 yards between them.
Junior defensive back Josh Herrera (Vista, CA) led the Bulldog defense with seven total tackles. Nine different players garnered tackles for a loss with junior defensive lineman Brett Hutter (Ontario, CA) and senior defensive lineman Alexander Ouji (Chula Vista, CA)recording sacks on Arguello.
In addition to his 29 receiving yards, Aubrey provided two kickoff returns for a total of 65 yards, giving him a team-leading 94 all-purpose yards.
Currently ranked seventh in the West Region, Redlands (6-1, 4-1 SCIAC) heads to Whittier College on Saturday for a 7 p.m. SCIAC showdown against the Poets. Although Whittier's record stands at 2-5, the Poets' losses to Occidental College and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges have come by just three points.
