The University of Redlands men's water polo faced top-seeded Loyola Marymount University in its second game of the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championships but came up short by a score of 6-13.
Against the Lions, Redlands trailed by one at 2-3 after the first frame and never recovered. A scoreless second stanza deepened the deficit at 2-6 but the Bulldogs cut the lead to three after three periods. However, LMU exploded for six goals in the final quarter, resulting in the 6-13 loss for the Maroon and Gray.
Redlands gained single scores from senior center Blake vanHartesvelt (Mercer Island, WA), senior center Brendan Meaney (Palm Desert, CA), junior driver Jeff Parsons (Newark, CA), junior center-defender Ben Ballard (Riverside, CA), freshman center John Nietzel (Old Greenwich, CT) and freshman center-defender Spencer Peugh (Alamo, CA).
Sophomore goalkeeper Jessie Gunther (Perris, CA) supplied seven stops from the Bulldog cage.
Earlier today, Redlands nabbed an exciting 9-8 victory over familiar foe Whittier College.
With the loss, the Bulldogs (19-15) next take on the winner of tomorrow's Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges-Chapman University match in a Saturday showdown of regional rivals at 2:20 p.m. CMS recently captured the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) crown after defeating Redlands in the semifinal game by a tight 9-8 decision in overtime.
