Box Score 4 The University of Redlands volleyball team racked up four more
wins with a strong showing at the Cal-Lu-Fornia Invitational on
Friday and Saturday in Thousand Oaks. The Bulldogs took down
Whitman College (WA) and Lewis & Clark College (OR) on Friday
night and then defeated Augustana College (IL) and LeTourneau
University (TX) on Saturday.
Redlands was pushed to four sets in the bookend matches of the
tournament but swept the middle two opponents.
The Maroon and Gray dropped the first set against Whitman,
24-26, and then rallied back for three wins, 25-19, 25-18, 25-16.
The Bulldogs combined for a team hitting percentage of .311, with
junior middle blocker Emily Capozzoli
(Poway, CA) leading the way with a .429 performance. Senior middle
blocker Megan Phillips
(Vista, CA) led the team with12 kills, while freshman setter Alisha
Cornick (Hollister, CA) distributed the ball well en route to
her 44 assists.
Playing in consecutive matches, Redlands made quick work of
Lewis & Clark, resulting in a 25-23, 25-18, 25-21 victory.
Capozzoli continued to lead the offensive charge with her 14 kills
for an outstanding clip of .500. Phillips provided an impressive
presence at the net with seven solo blocks, accounting for more
than half of the team's total of 13. Senior libero Heather Anthony
(Redwood City, CA) came up with a match-high 24 digs from the back
row.
On Saturday, the Bulldogs returned to action with a sweep of
Augustana, 25-15, 25, 21, 25-17. Senior outside hitter Jackie Hamilton
(Loma Linda, CA) paced the offense with 12 kills on 31 swings with
only one error for a solid hitting percentage of .355. As a team,
Redlands hit at an impressive clip of .360. Senior libero Chelsea Arcaris
(Vist, CA) and freshman outside hitter Morgan
Buckner (Sam Rafael, CA) provided 21 and 17 digs,
respectively.
The Maroon and Gray wrapped up a solid tournament with a 25-21,
25-15, 21-25, 25-21 win over LeTourneau in the team's second outing
on Saturday. Redlands took advantage of opportunity to play some
additional Bulldogs, with senior middle blocker Kirby McCord
(Huntington Beach, CA) headlining this group with a team-leading
hitting percentage of .375. She racked up nine kills on 22 attempts
with only two errors. Hamilton knocked down 14 kills as the only
double-digit performer for Redlands. Arcaris put forth an
outstanding defensive effort with 49 digs in the four-setter.
With these victories, the Bulldogs (8-0) make
their best start during Head Coach Mari Burningham's
seven-year tenure at Redlands. She now sits just one win shy of
eclipsing the 100-win career mark at the helm of the program.
The Bulldogs face off against regional rival Chapman University
on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Orange.
