No. 25 Redlands Volleyball Drops Four-Setter to Chapman

Box Score

The No. 25 University of Redlands volleyball team dropped its second match in as many outings with a 1-3 decision to regional rival Chapman University in tonight's home opener in Currier Gym. Despite the home court advantage, the Bulldogs struggled with errors at critical points in the match, which led to the 23-25, 25-23, 20-25, 24-26 final.

The first set saw a back-and-forth battle between two offensively-minded teams as Chapman mustered an impressive .341 hitting percentage while Redlands posted a mark of .244. With the score tied at 23 all, Redlands gave an untimely point away on a missed serve and then ended the set on a hitting error.

The Maroon and Gray rallied back in the second frame, tying the match score at one apiece. Tied at 20 all, Redlands rattled off five of its match-high 19 kills on a .263 hitting percentage.

Chapman controlled the momentum in the third stanza as the score was tied only once at two all. The Panthers garnered an early 7-3 lead and never looked back. The Bulldog offense slowed to a .091 pace, which helped the Panthers to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

With the match on the line, Redlands fought back on more than one occasion in the fourth set, registering 18 tie scores and nine lead-changes. The Bulldogs rallied from 16-21 down to tie it at 21 as their block came alive at this critical juncture. After exchanging points to eventually tie it again at 22, 23, and 24, the Bulldogs hit a ball out of bounds and then fell short on the ensuing play with Chapman's freshman outside hitter McKenna Roice (Branson, MO) recording her 14th kill of the night.

Freshman outside hitter Morgan Buckner (San Rafael, CA) led the Bulldog attack with 15 kills to go along with 13 digs. Senior middle blocker Megan Phillips (Vista, CA) contributed 14 kills, eight block assists and one solo stop. Senior outside hitter Jackie Hamilton (Loma Linda, CA) and junior middle blocker Emily Capozzoli (Poway, CA) provided additional double-digit performances with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Senior libero Chelsea Arcaris (Vista, CA) supplied 30 digs from the back row. Freshman setter Jennifer Wacker (Longmont, CO) took over the setting duties midway through the second set, racking up 38 assists, seven digs, and four block assists.

Chapman gained an impressive showing from sophomore middle blocker Kate Ferrin (Anchorage, AK), who knocked down 16 kills on 24 attempts for a hitting percentage of .500. Freshman outside hitter Mady Dahlstrom (Spokane, WA) and Roice put away 17 and 14 kills, respectively. Junior libero Alyssa Swateck (Chino Hills, CA) popped up a match-leading 33 digs, while senior setter Kat Kowalski (Glendora, CA) dished out 35 assists.

Redlands (9-2, 0-1 SCIAC) looks to rebound in tomorrow's doubleheader against La Sierra University at 3 p.m. and conference foe Caltech at 7:30 p.m. Both matches take place in the friendly confines of Currier Gym.
