Box Score The No. 25 University of Redlands volleyball team dropped its
second match in as many outings with a 1-3 decision to regional
rival Chapman University in tonight's home opener in Currier Gym.
Despite the home court advantage, the Bulldogs struggled with
errors at critical points in the match, which led to the 23-25,
25-23, 20-25, 24-26 final.
The first set saw a back-and-forth battle between two
offensively-minded teams as Chapman mustered an impressive .341
hitting percentage while Redlands posted a mark of .244. With the
score tied at 23 all, Redlands gave an untimely point away on a
missed serve and then ended the set on a hitting error.
The Maroon and Gray rallied back in the second frame, tying the
match score at one apiece. Tied at 20 all, Redlands rattled off
five of its match-high 19 kills on a .263 hitting percentage.
Chapman controlled the momentum in the third stanza as the score
was tied only once at two all. The Panthers garnered an early 7-3
lead and never looked back. The Bulldog offense slowed to a .091
pace, which helped the Panthers to take a 2-1 lead in the
match.
With the match on the line, Redlands fought back on more than
one occasion in the fourth set, registering 18 tie scores and nine
lead-changes. The Bulldogs rallied from 16-21 down to tie it at 21
as their block came alive at this critical juncture. After
exchanging points to eventually tie it again at 22, 23, and 24, the
Bulldogs hit a ball out of bounds and then fell short on the
ensuing play with Chapman's freshman outside hitter McKenna Roice
(Branson, MO) recording her 14th kill of the night.
Freshman outside hitter Morgan Buckner (San Rafael, CA) led the
Bulldog attack with 15 kills to go along with 13 digs. Senior
middle blocker Megan Phillips (Vista, CA) contributed 14 kills,
eight block assists and one solo stop. Senior outside hitter Jackie Hamilton (Loma Linda, CA) and junior middle blocker Emily Capozzoli
(Poway, CA) provided additional double-digit performances with 12
and 11 kills, respectively. Senior libero Chelsea Arcaris (Vista,
CA) supplied 30 digs from the back row. Freshman setter Jennifer Wacker (Longmont, CO) took over the setting duties midway through
the second set, racking up 38 assists, seven digs, and four block
assists.
Chapman gained an impressive showing from sophomore middle
blocker Kate Ferrin (Anchorage, AK), who knocked down 16 kills on
24 attempts for a hitting percentage of .500. Freshman outside
hitter Mady Dahlstrom (Spokane, WA) and Roice put away 17 and 14
kills, respectively. Junior libero Alyssa Swateck (Chino Hills, CA)
popped up a match-leading 33 digs, while senior setter Kat Kowalski
(Glendora, CA) dished out 35 assists.
Redlands (9-2, 0-1 SCIAC) looks to rebound in tomorrow's
doubleheader against La Sierra University at 3 p.m. and conference
foe Caltech at 7:30 p.m. Both matches take place in the friendly
confines of Currier Gym.
