Uphold Lifts 18th-Ranked Bulldog Softball over Whittier College Poets

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The No. 18 University of Redlands softball team halted its recent skid with a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) doubleheader sweep over visiting Whittier College on Saturday, blasting the Poets in the opener by a score of 15-7 after six innings and nabbing a tight 2-0 victory in the nightcap.

During the first game, sophomore pitcher Kayla Uphold (Fontana, CA) notched the victory after six strong innings from the circle en route to her team-leading 11th triumph on the season. The starting pitcher also helped herself out by going 3-for-3 at the dish with two runs and three RBI.

In a roller coaster-like ballgame with four lead-changes, the Bulldogs finally hit their stride in the bottom of the sixth when they came from behind to eventually win by the eight-run mercy rule.

In addition to Uphold's stellar showing, junior second baseman Molly Duran (Corona, CA) registered a career-high five RBI off of a 3-for-3 performance at the plate.

The Bulldogs' four-through-six hitters combined for eight runs and five RBI while colleting seven knocks.

The nightcap emitted a much different feel, as Redlands was the lone team to score and did so in only one frame.

Uphold provided the club's dramatic ending when she crushed a triple to the right-center gap in the bottom of sixth, pushing home senior first baseman Lizett Casillas (Pomona, CA) for the go-ahead run.

Duncan continued her impressive day by reaching on a walk in three straight at-bats.

Freshman right fielder Amanda Lievanos (Anaheim, CA) supplied the only multi-hit game for Redlands as she connected on two singles.

Behind the tandem of freshman starter Gabrielle Sciuto (Poway, CA) and junior reliever Breanna Ruelas (Brawley, CA), Redlands threw seven scoreless innings while allowing just one hit. Ruelas picked up her fourth win of 2011, finishing off the final two innings by fanning three batters and walking one. Sciuto rang-up five Poet hitters over five frames and had her no-hit performance broken up in the top of the fifth.

Redlands (23-7, 12-4) hosts regional foe Pacific Lutheran University (WA) in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, beginning at 3 p.m. on the "Field of Dreams."
