Box Score Despite the impressive momentum from Friday's five-set victory, the University of Redlands volleyball team fell short in its final match of the season on Saturday. The Bulldogs struggled to find their rhythm against the offensively powered Tigers of Occidental College and suffered a 7-25, 18-25, 9-25 defeat to end the 2012 season.
Redlands faced a highly motivated Occidental squad that needed a solid victory to shore up the final spot in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Postseason Tournament. The Tigers came out on fire and never looked back, unleashing a hitting percentage of .407 against the Bulldogs.
Senior outside hitter Sam Dodson (Alamogordo, NM) served as the Maroon and Gray's top attacker, posting six kills.
As a team, Redlands put up 5.5 blocks, which surpassed Occidental's total of 4.0. Freshman middle blocker Ashton Martin (Redlands, CA) led the Bulldogs with three block assists.
In addition, junior libero Brittney Overgaag (Palm Desert, CA) paced the Redlands defense with nine of the team's 27 digs.
The Bulldogs completed the season with an 8-15 record, which nearly tripled their wins from a year ago. Furthermore, the squad went 3-13 for eighth place in SCIAC competition, following a season sweep of Caltech and a five-set win over Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.
