Box Score 2 The No. 11 University of Redlands softball team fired off 31 hits during Saturday's Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) doubleheader sweep of the Regals of Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, recording their first wins of the 2012 campaign by scores of 16-5 in six innings and 8-5.
During the opener, the Maroon and Gray put up runs in all but the second inning with a six-run explosion in the sixth highlighting the team's offensive output.
With two outs, the Bulldogs strung together hits and took advantage of CLU's error before freshman designated player Linda Park (Torrance, CA) unleashed a three-RBI home run over the center-field fence. She finished the game with five RBI on two hits while also scoring one run.
In addition, junior second baseman Arlene Martinez (Corona, CA) ripped off her first career home run, while junior center fielder Sarah Beeman (Corona, CA) and junior pitcher Kayla Uphold (Fontana, CA) provided multi-RBI performances.
Uphold secured the win from the mound, going five innings with four earned runs and seven hits. Sophomore pitcher Gabrielle Sciuto (Poway, CA) shut the door on the Regals with two strikeouts in the final inning.
The nightcap proved to be a tighter contest but Redlands scored eight runs by the fourth inning and never relinquished control of the game.
Sophomore right fielder Amanda Lievanos (Anaheim, CA) crushed her third home run of the season to initiate the Bulldogs' scoring in the second inning. She went on to lead the team with three hits and four RBI, which came off of the long ball and a pair of singles.
The Maroon and Gray's biggest inning came in the third with four runs, which included RBI by Lievanos, Park, and senior first baseman Rikki Scates (Redlands, CA).
Senior pitcher Breanna Ruelas (Brawley, CA) notched the win after 6.1 innings, striking out five while giving up four earned runs.
Redlands (2-4, 2-0 SCIAC) heads to Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Saturday for a 12 noon SCIAC doubleheader against the Sagehens.
