No. 11 UR Softball Destroys SCIAC Competition in Consecutive Doubleheaders

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4

The No. 11 Redlands softball team dominated Pomona-Pitzer Colleges and Whittier College in a pair of doubleheaders over the weekend, moving to the top of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) standings as the only remaining undefeated team. The Bulldogs posted three five-inning victories, highlighted by two shutouts, to go along with a 12-4 thrashing of the Sagehens in the opener. Among the four contests, the Maroon and Gray tallied 48 runs and uncorked 47 hits, which included seven home runs.

Junior pitcher Kayla Uphold (Fontana, CA) threw a complete game in the weekend's opener against Pomona-Pitzer. She scattered five hits and struck out three while giving up two earned runs in seven innings.

The Bulldog defense struggled a bit with four errors but the team posted runs in all but one inning to defeat the Sagehens. Freshman short stop Linda Park (Torrance, CA) led the Maroon and Gray with a 3-for-4 performance, which included a three-RBI home run in the seventh.

During Saturday's night cap, Redlands fired off nine runs over the third, fourth and fifth innings to capture the win on the mercy rule. Senior pinch-hitter Jen Boschken (Davis, CA) stepped up for the Bulldogs by unleashing a two-RBI long ball in the final frame.

After allowing just three hits, senior pitcher Breanna Ruelas (Brawley, CA) earned the shutout victory in five innings of work.

On Sunday, Redlands headed to Whittier College for a doubleheader against the Poets. The team continued to impress by rolling to a 19-2 victory in the opening contest. The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first stanza and never looked back.

The Poets wisely walked sophomore right fielder Amanda Lievanos (Anaheim, CA) on four occasions but allowed her to hit in the third inning, which resulted in a grand slam for her fifth bomb of the season.

In addition, senior first baseman Rikki Scates (Redlands, CA), sophomore designated player Erika Houseman (Santa Cruz, CA) and junior second baseman Arlene Martinez (Corona, CA) all recorded home runs for the Bulldogs.

Uphold and sophomore pitcher Gabrielle Sciuto (Poway, CA) joined forces from the mound, with Uphold earning the win after throwing the first two innings as the starter.

During the squad's final game of the two-day series, Redlands scored eight runs over the third, fourth and fifth innings to benefit from the mercy rule once again. With two outs, the Maroon and Gray posted a five-spot by taking advantage of doubles by Scates and Uphold while making the most of a Poet miscue.

By fanning three batters and displacing just two hits, Ruelas notched her second victory of the weekend with a complete-game effort.

Uphold led the offense with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate, which included three RBI.

Following a four-error performance in the weekend's opener, the Bulldogs performed flawlessly on defense in the final three games.

Redlands (6-4, 6-0 SCIAC) returns home on Saturday for a non-conference tilt against NAIA opponent Vanguard University. The first pitch is scheduled for 12 noon at the Softball "Field of Dreams."
