Box Score 4 The 11th-ranked University of Redlands softball team lit up the scoreboard over the weekend, notching 42 runs on 50 hits in four victories. The Bulldogs destroyed the Leopards of the University of La Verne in Saturday's Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) doubleheader by scores of 13-3 and 10-1, before silencing the Gorloks of Webster University (MO) during in-region competition on Sunday, 9-0 and 10-0.
Beyond the Maroon and Gray's impressive offensive output, junior Kayla Uphold's (Fontana, CA) perfect game against Webster highlighted the weekend's contests. She pitched a complete game in five innings without a hit, run or walk. She fanned one batter.
Against La Verne, Redlands put up seven runs in the fourth inning to take a commanding lead. Although the Leopards answered with three of their own, the Bulldogs responded with a five-spot in the fifth to shorten Saturday's opener.
Sophomore centerfielder Amanda Lievanos (Anaheim, CA) and Uphold fired off three RBI apiece, with Lievanos' coming on her seventh home run of the season.
Five other Bulldogs plated runners in the 13-3 victory.
Uphold grabbed the win from the circle, going five innings with three hits and two strikeouts.
During the night cap, Redlands broke open the game with back-to-back four-run innings, leading to the 10-1 tally after five frames.
Senior first baseman Rikki Scates (Redlands, CA) connected on her second homerun of the day for a 3-for-3 showing at the plate with a game-high five RBI. Beyond her long ball, she tallied a pair of doubles as one of two Bulldogs to notch a multi-bag hit. Senior short stop Kai Masutani (Honolulu, HI) also roped a double for an RBI.
Senior pitcher Breanna Ruelas (Brawley, CA) scattered five hits and fanned two Leopards in her sixth win of the season.
On Sunday, the Bulldogs continued to roll, dismissing the Gorloks of Webster in two shortened games.
Beyond Uphold's perfect showing from the circle, Lievanos remained steady at the dish with a 2-for-3 performance with three RBI and a run scored.
Freshman designated player Linda Park (Torrance, CA) unleashed a two-run shot, while sophomore catcher Amanda Clark (Riverside, CA), junior second baseman Arlene Martinez (Corona, CA), Masutani and Lievanos all registered doubles for the Maroon and Gray.
During the final game of the weekend, the Bulldogs' patience was tested after sitting one run of the shortened contest for two innings. Redlands erupted for six runs in the first but had to wait until Lievanos ripped off another long ball, this one coming on a three-run dinger against the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth.
Clark, Martinez and sophomore left fielder Janelle Carrasco (Whittier, CA) also tallied multi-hit games.
Ruelas and sophomore Gabrielle Sciuto (Poway, CA) teamed up in the circle, with Ruelas earning the win after four scoreless innings. Sciuto shut the door on the Gorloks in the final two frames.
Redlands (14-4) continues its 20-game home stand on Saturday when it hosts Whittier College in a SCIAC doubleheader at 12 noon.
