Box Score 2 After dropping the first game on Friday, the No. 8 University of Redlands softball team bounced back with a vengeance by defeating No. 17 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in a 9-0, six-inning performance to clinch the program's 10th Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship. With Head Coach Laurie Nevarez at the helm for a decade, the Bulldogs have won the last nine in a row.
The Athenas came out firing in game one and denied Redlands its first-game chance to capture the coveted title by ending the Bulldogs' win streak at 16 with Friday's 5-0 decision. As a struggling battery and a quiet offense simultaneously struck the Bulldogs, they remained scoreless through seven innings of action for the first time since March 1.
Needing only one win from today's doubleheader to secure the program's 10th overall title, Redlands quickly recovered in the night cap by rattling off 13 hits en route to the shortened-game shutout.
With the bases loaded in the top of the first, freshman short stop Vicki King (Thousand Oaks, CA) singled up the middle to plate freshman left-fielder Grace Rose (Villa Park, CA) for the Maroon and Gray's opening run.
Following CMS' multiple defensive switches, including a new pitcher, the Bulldogs benefitted from an infield single from sophomore utility player Nikoli Sharp (Lincoln, CA), which brought home freshman right-fielder AJ Carrasco (Whittier, CA) and senior center-fielder Sarah Beeman (Corona, CA). Sophomore third baseman Linda Park (Torrance, CA) and junior catcher Kristen Hooper (Riverside, CA) fired off back-to-back doubles to left field, giving Redlands a solid 6-0 lead in the opening frame. These two-baggers bookended CMS' second pitching change of the inning.
With the lead well in hand, Beeman provided an RBI-double in the second stanza, while King uncorked a long single to bring home a pair of runs in the top of the sixth.
Senior pitcher Kayla Uphold (Fontana, CA) shut down the CMS offense through five innings of work, striking out three and scattering four hits. Despite her opening-game loss from the circle, she improved to 21-6 on the season with her championship performance in the second contest.
Junior pitcher Kaitlyn Hooper (Riverside, CA) provided one inning of relief in each game, striking out one while facing a total of eight batters on the day.
Redlands (32-8, 22-6 SCIAC) now looks forward to hosting the 2013 SCIAC Postseason Tournament, which includes the top four teams in the standings, on April 26-27. Check back at www.goredlands.com for details.
