The University of Redlands men's soccer team continued Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) competition on Saturday afternoon as it played host to the Pomona-Pitzer Colleges Sagehens. After trailing at halftime for the second game in a row, the Bulldogs fought back once again and nabbed a 2-1 overtime victory with flare in a weekend that honored the Bulldog men's soccer alumni.

The Bulldogs jumped out of the gate with quality shot attempts form senior forward Matej Kustura (Las Vegas, NV) and sophomore midfielder Pat Roraff (Redlands, CA), which put immediate pressure on the Pomona-Pitzer goalkeeper. Senior forward Charles Izydorek (Redlands, CA) attempted to net a header in the 20th minute but missed wide by a slight margin.

About five minutes later, Pomona-Pitzer snagged the first score of the game after a shot attempt bounced off of a Bulldog defender into the goal.

Refusing to go away, the Bulldogs continued to create offensive opportunities, notching more than twice as many as the visitors in the opening frame. Senior midfielder Grahame Fitz (Palo Alto, CA) uncorked a shot in the 34th minute, which missed wide. Senior defender Nico Johnson (Las Vegas, NV) unleashed a powerful blast off of a free kick, which was right outside of the goalkeeper's box but sliced past the far post.

The start of the second period presented an immediate threat from sophomore defender Colin Zaccagnio (Phoenix, AZ) when headed the ball toward the net, forcing the goalkeeper to come up with the save. Kustura and Izydorek followed Zaccagnio's lead, but were unable to capitalize.

The game progressed in a physical manner, as 11 fouls were dished out between the squads, including one Sagehen yellow card.

After a pair of anxious starts to the Bulldog attack that resulted in offsides, the Maroon and Gray found the equalizer in the 70th minute. Freshman midfielder Cody Dunham (Fountain Hills, AZ) fed a pass to freshman forward Chase Boone (Beaverton, OR) who split two defenders on a no-look feed to Roraff, who promptly buried the score over the Pomona-Pitzer goalkeeper.

Despite the U of R recording five more shots in the second half, the game headed to overtime.

Pomona-Pitzer recorded the first shot in the extra stanza but failed to connect. The Bulldogs countered with a shot of their own, and the one shot is all they needed.

As the ball was being played on the right side of the field, Roraff gathered himself and dribbled towards the Pomona-Pitzer end line. After surveying the goalkeeper's box, Roraff guided a pass between four Sagehen defenders and found Boone, who promptly netted the game-winning goal.

Defensively, senior defender Nico Johnson (Las Vegas, NV) set the tone for the Bulldogs, with sophomore defender Tom Elsea (Mission Viejo, CA) and sophomore midfielder Austin Moore (Las Vegas, NV) following suit.

Freshman goalkeeper Josh Haskill (Lakewood, CA) improved his record to 3-2, as he hauled in three saves in his 98:20 minutes between the pipes.

The Bulldogs outshot the Sagehens, 19-14, while also registering seven corner kicks to the Sagehens' two.

The Bulldogs (5-5, 4-2 SCIAC) continue their SCIAC journey on Wednesday, October 1, when they travel to Whittier College for a 7 p.m. showdown against the Poets (4-2-1, 2-2-1 SCIAC).
