Box Score The University of Redlands men's soccer team took care of business in Saturday morning's Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) clash against the Whittier College Poets to solidify its hold on the top spot in the standings. Behind sophomore forward Alexander Knox's (Kirkland, WA) pair of first-half goals, the Bulldogs grabbed an important 2-1 road-win.
Redlands dominated the offensive side of the ball, firing off 11 shots in each half. The Bulldogs came out with an aggressive style, as they uncorked five attempts in the first 10 minutes.
With sophomore goalkeeper Josh Haskill (Lakewood, CA) directing the effort, the Bulldog backline of junior Tom Elsea (Mission Viejo, CA), sophomore Keoni Yates (Kailua-Kona, HI), junior Colin Zaccagnio (Phoenix, AZ), and junior Austin Moore (Las Vegas, NV0 held the Poets to a mere two shots in the opening 45 minutes.
Moments after a corner kick, Knox received a pass from sophomore midfielder Vidal Ornelas (Corona, CA) and then slotted it past the Whittier goalkeeper for the Bulldogs' 1-0 advantage in the 35th minute.
Less than three minutes later, Redlands earned another corner kick, which led to a quality look by Yates but it bounced off the post. However, Knox was there to make the most of the second-chance opportunity, as he scored his sixth goal of the season.
Although the Poets pulled one back early in the second frame, Redlands continued to possess and control the game with quality looks and stellar defense.
Overall, Knox, sophomore midfielder Casey ChubbFertal (Eugene, OR), and freshman forward Kayvon Parsa (West Hills, CA) each unleashed three shots for the Bulldogs.
Haskill finished with two saves in a complete-game showing for his eighth-consecutive win of the season.
Redlands (13-2-2, 11-2-1 SCIAC) travels to Cal Lutheran University on Monday, October 26, for an important SCIAC game against the Kingsmen at 7 p.m.
