The University of Redlands men's water polo traveled to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges for Wednesday night's Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match. After a sluggish start in the first period, the Bulldogs out-played the Stags in the remaining three frames but never completed the comeback, resulting in a 5-8 loss.
Although the Stags jumped out to a 5-1 lead, Redlands regrouped to out-score the host team by a 4-3 margin for the rest of the game.
Sophomore driver Kevin Chapa (Carlsbad, CA) notched the Maroon and Gray's only first-period score. Sophomore center Matt Shippen (Santa Maria, CA) and junior driver Kyle Murata (Brea, CA) stepped up in the second stanza by firing one goal each past the CMS goalkeeper.
Following a scoreless third, senior center John Koning (Poway, CA) produced the Bulldogs' two netters of the final frame.
Junior goalkeeper Chris Sekula (LaGrange, IL) registered eight saves in a full-game effort.
Redlands (11-12, 2-2 SCIAC) returns home to the Thompson Aquatic Center on Saturday, October 31, for an 11 a.m. showdown against Pomona-Pitzer Colleges. Prior to the game, the Bulldogs will recognize their seniors in a short ceremony.
