Box Score The University of Redlands men's soccer squad continued Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action by facing off against the Occidental College Tigers in Eagle Rock on Saturday morning. In a game that saw nearly equal offensive opportunities for both teams, the Bulldogs reigned supreme by capturing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Tigers.
The Bulldogs saw eight opportunities in the first half, as sophomore Alexander Knox (Kirkland, WA) fired off two shots in the opening 10 minutes of play. The Bulldogs remained relentless early on and capitalized in the 11th minute when sophomore midfielder Vidal Ornelas (Corona, CA) put the Bulldogs ahead with the first goal of his Redlands career.
However, the Tigers answered back with a late goal to knot up the score before the end of the first half.
Redlands' sophomore forward Chase Boone (Portland, OR) made his presence known in the opening minute of the second half, as he fired off a shot that was saved by the Tigers' goalkeeper. It was not long after that Boone tried his foot for the second time of the second stanza and came up clutch by sending home the go-ahead score in the 62nd minute.
Occidental saw seven chances on goal, but to no avail, as sophomore goalkeeper Josh Haskill (Lakewood, CA) snatched up two of the attempts while the other two were blocked by the Bulldog defense.
After remaining diligent on both sides of the pitch, the Bulldogs took home the important 2-1 victory.
The Maroon and Gray fired off 14 shots and tallied seven corner kicks.
Boone led the way with five shots, while sophomore midfielder Casey ChubbFertal (Eugene, OR) followed with four shots.
While hauling in four saves, Haskill earned his second-consecutive victory in a complete-game effort.
In addition to handing the Tigers their first SCIAC loss of the season, the Bulldogs moved into second place in the conference standings, sitting just a half-game back of the University of La Verne.
The Bulldogs (7-2-2, 5-2-1 SCIAC) square off against the Caltech Beavers on Monday, October 5, in a 7 p.m. match under the lights at Farquhar Field.
