Box Score The University of Redlands volleyball team closed out the 2015 campaign by hosting No. 10 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in Saturday's Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match in Currier Gym. After honoring seniors Ashton Martin (Redlands, CA), Marisa Gile (Yucaipa, CA), Karly Burningham (Sonoma, CA), Lauren Ellingwood (Kirkland, WA), and Kimberly Nevarez, the Bulldogs battled against the Athenas but came up short of the upset by scores of 15-25, 11-25, 16-25.
Redlands struggled to force the opponents out of system throughout the match, which allowed the Athenas to run an effective and diverse offense.
By the third set, the Bulldogs had made a few adjustments to produce their best attack of the night with 10 kills. The Maroon and Gray also battled through the final whistle, running down balls at the scorer's table and working to force CMS to earn every point.
Redlands relied on a more balanced offense with sophomore outside hitter Kailee McCoy (Chandler, AZ), freshman outside hitter Kaylee Burdick (Sun Valley, CA), and Martin each putting away five kills. Ellingwood was the main facilitator, with 17 assists. Sophomore libero Abby Hickman (Phoenix, AZ) supplied 14 digs.
As a team, the Bulldogs blocked well, recording nine total blocks on the night, as compared to CMS' six. Sophomore middle blocker Kiersten Langerud (Williamsburg, VA) and Martin each contributed five block assists.
Redlands volleyball completes Head Coach Lisa Lindberg's first season at the helm with a 6-20 overall record, which doubles the team's wins from a year ago.
