Box Score The University of Redlands volleyball team came up against the 10th-ranked Athenas of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in Tuesday's Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match. While struggling to counter the effective opponents on the other side of the court, the Bulldogs fell in straight sets, 11-25, 12-25, 17-25.
Redlands faced an early deficit in the first two sets but then adjusted well in the third frame to keep things close through 11-all. Freshman outside hitter Kaylee Burdick (Sun Valley, CA) and senior middle blocker Ashton Martin (Redlands, CA) stepped up with quality kills to highlight this stretch. Freshman setter Devin Callahan (Seattle, WA) orchestrated the offense in the final frame, producing six assists for the Maroon and Gray.
But CMS responded by finding the hardwood on consecutive rallies to pull away for the sweeping win.
Overall, Martin earned an impressive hitting percentage of .545 off of six kills and no errors. Burdick added seven kills, while junior right-side hitter Stephanie Dustin (San Marino, CA) added four.
Sophomore libero Abby Hickman (Phoenix, AZ) supplied a team-high 13 digs, to go along with five assists.
Redlands (5-11, 1-7 SCIAC) strives to bounce back on Friday, October 9, when it hosts the Panthers of Chapman University at 7:30 p.m. in Currier Gym.
