Redlands Men's Soccer Lights up the Pitch in 3-0 SCIAC Win over Whittier

Box Score

The University of Redlands men's soccer team continued Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action on Wednesday night by facing off against the Whittier College Poets under the moonlight at Farquhar Field. The Bulldogs pieced together a beauty of a contest, as three different players scored in the commanding 3-0 victory over the Poets.

The Bulldogs took to the pitch on a mission, as the first shot attempt by the home team found the back of the net, compliments of sophomore midfielder Sergio Valencia (San Jose, CA) in the fifth minute of action. After Whittier failed to clear the ball, Valencia corralled the attempt and swiftly slashed through the Poets' defense before unleashing a two-touch hammer that skipped into the lower-left corner for the 1-0 advantage.

Despite the lead, Redlands remained relentless in its offensive pressure. In the 65th minute, sophomore forward Chase Boone (Beaverton, OR) earned a penalty kick after aggressively positioning himself in the box and drawing a foul. Boone went on to bury the score, catching the goalkeeper leaning the opposite direction to extend the Bulldogs' lead to 2-0.

Sophomore defender Keoni Yates (Kailua-Kona, HI) tried his foot in the 76th minute of action and came up offensively superior by rocketing a top-shelf netter for his first-career score.

The Bulldogs reeked of offensive prowess by outshooting the Poets 28-9. In addition, Redlands earned five corner kicks to Whittier's two.

Of the 28 Bulldog shot attempts, Boone carted the heaviest foot by firing off six. Sophomore midfielder Casey ChubbFertal (Eugene, OR) and Valencia fired off five each.

Sophomore goalkeeper Josh Haskill (Lakewood, CA) maintained the shutout with four saves en route to his first victory of the season.

The defensive brigade of junior Colin Zaccagnio (Phoenix, AZ), junior Tom Elsea (Mission Viejo, CA), and Yates blanked the Poets while holding them to eight shots in the game.

Head Coach Ralph Perez utilized 24 players to show off a deep bench. Freshman midfielder Alec Vaughan (Bakersfield, CA) and sophomore forward Kamal Bilal (Chicago, IL) made their first-career appearances as well.

The Bulldogs (6-2-2, 4-2-1 SCIAC) continue SCIAC action on Saturday, October 3, by facing off against the Occidental College Tigers in Eagle Rock at 11 a.m.
