Box Score 2 The University of Redlands men's water polo concluded the 2015 UCSD Triton Invitational on Sunday by upsetting the 14th-ranked Loyola Marymount University Lions in a 10-8 decision. After trailing 5-8 halfway through the third period, the Bulldogs stormed back with five unanswered goals to snag their first win of the season in exciting fashion.
After a scoreless first frame, both teams found the back of the net three times during the second period. They traded scores to start the third, before LMU enjoyed an offensive outburst to garner the biggest lead of the game at 8-5.
However, Redlands rallied with a late-game scoring spree of its own, with sophomore driver Kevin Chapa (Carlsbad, CA) initiating the comeback. Senior center John Koning (Poway, CA) fired off back-to-back goals to even the count at eight apiece by the end of the period.
During the fourth frame, sophomore center-defender Danny Hartwig (Vista, CA) and Chapa teamed up for quality netters, which was enough to keep the Lions at bay through the final whistle.
Koning finished the game with a team-high three goals. Defensively, junior goalkeeper Chris Sekula (LaGrange, IL) stepped up by snagging 16 saves in the complete-game effort.
The Bulldogs' day began with a morning match against the host Tritons of UCSD. Although Redlands led by a score of 3-2 after the first period, it struggled to match San Diego's offensive productivity in the remaining frames. Hartwig, sophomore center Matt Shippen (Santa Maria, CA), freshman driver Ty Williams (Rancho Cucamonga, CA), and junior center-defender Mark Zikov (La Quinta, CA) all recorded at least one goal in the loss. Sekula patrolled the Bulldogs' cage and collected 10 saves.
Redlands (1-3) looks forward to hosting the Inland Empire Classic on Saturday, September 12, and Sunday, September 13. The Bulldogs get things started with a 9 a.m. match against No. 9 UC Irvine, followed by a 3 p.m. showdown against Chapman University.
