Box Score 2 The University of Redlands men's water polo took on No. 8 Pepperdine University and Santa Clara University in the opening day of the UC Davis Aggie Shootout. After dropping a lopsided loss to Pepperdine, the Bulldogs earned a hard-fought 10-9 overtime victory against Santa Clara for an exciting finish to Saturday's action.
Against Santa Clara, the Bulldogs continuously rallied back from a deficit and eventually overtook the lead at 7-6. Junior center Billy Clifford (Redlands, CA) put Redlands on the board late in the first quarter, before junior attack player Grant Curry (San Diego, CA) evened it up at two apiece.
Another two-goal scoring spurt by the Broncos forced Redlands to work from behind, as senior utility player Max Taylor (Henderson, NV) and junior center-defender Ilan Dayan (Sao Paulo, Brazil) fired goals through the posts to make it five-all with 6:49 left in the third quarter. Freshman goalkeeper Chris Martinez (Santa Ana, CA) put up a wall as the Maroon and Gray's last line of defense, especially in this frame by making four of his eight saves in the match.
Taylor and junior attack player Ty Williams (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) provided one score each to give the Bulldogs their first lead of the day at 7-6 with 3:09 to go in the third frame.
Sophomore attack player Spencer Allen's (Long Beach, CA) fourth-quarter goal made it 8-6 but Santa Clara answered the call and eventually tied it up at eight to force overtime.
After the teams traded scores in the extra period, Redlands gained the game-winner with six seconds left. Curry tossed in the entry pass to Taylor, who fired it past the SCU goalkeeper for the 10-9 Bulldog victory. Although the Broncos launched a final attempt at the buzzer, the Maroon and Gray walked away victorious.
Earlier in the day, Clifford was the only goal-scorer in the Bulldogs' 1-13 loss to the Waves.
Redlands (2-6) faces MIT at 12 noon and Davis at 3 p.m. in Sunday's competition at the Aggie Shootout.
