Redlands Men's Water Polo Outlasts Cal Lutheran in Exciting Overtime Win, 14-13

Box Score

The University of Redlands men's water polo team jumped back in the win column with a dramatic 14-13 victory in overtime against Cal Lutheran University on Wednesday afternoon in Thousand Oaks.  Amidst an intense back-and-forth battle, the Bulldogs held a slight 11-9 advantage with 2:53 left in regulation, but the Kingsmen refused to go away and eventually forced the overtime.  The score remained knotted in the first extra period before freshman utility player Jasen Swan (Glendora, CA) fired off the eventual game-winner with 49 seconds left in the second overtime.

Neither team developed more than a two-goal advantage throughout the contest, with Redlands gaining the first one at 5-3 with 4:31 remaining in the second quarter.  Down 2-3 to start the frame, the Bulldogs gained three-straight goals to gain the lead, with senior utility player Max Taylor (Henderson, NV) bookending junior utility player Mitchell Walker's (Taylorsville, UT) first goal of the game.

The teams continued to trade offensive punches, with the Maroon and Gray holding on to a 6-5 advantage through the midway point of the game, as Taylor completed his second-quarter hat trick.

Redlands earned an 8-6 lead with 6:15 left in the third period as a result of goals by freshman attack player Aaron White (San Jose, CA) and sophomore attack player Spencer Allen (Long Beach, CA).  In addition, freshman goalkeeper Chris Martinez (Santa Ana, CA) continued to serve as the Bulldogs' cog with critical stops between the pipes.

However, Cal Lutheran mustered yet another comeback to tie it up at eight apiece, as the game headed into the fourth frame.

The Maroon and Gray continued to press on the offensive gas pedal, with goals by junior center-defender Ilan Dayan (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Swan, and White keeping the visitors out in front at 11-9 with 2:53 to go.

But the Kingsmen refused to go away, as they clawed their way back to force the overtime, with the game-tying goal coming with just four ticks left on the clock.

Nonetheless, the dynamic struggle continued into the extra period, with each team finding the back of the net twice to extend the game once more.  Taylor capped off his five-goal performance with one last netter during this frame, while White scored one goal for the third-straight period.

Finally, in the second overtime, Redlands outlasted the Kingsmen, with Swan firing off the game-winning goal with 49 seconds before the Bulldog defense shut down the home team's final efforts to even the tally once more.

Martinez finished the game with 15 saves.

Redlands (3-9, 1-1 SCIAC) heads to Whittier College on Saturday, September 30, for a SCIAC match against the Poets at 11 a.m.  The team also takes on Cal Baptist University in Riverside at 4 p.m. that day.
