Redlands Softball Sweeps Cal Lutheran in Important SCIAC Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The University of Redlands took to the road for Saturday's Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) doubleheader and came with a sweep of the Regals. The Bulldogs set the tone for the series with an 11-3 win in game one and went on to complete the sweep with a 4-1 victory in the nightcap.

The Maroon and Gray put a run up in the second inning of game one when senior shortstop Jordyn Smith (Highland, CA) doubled through the left side to push across senior catcher Nova Siegel (Fairfield, CA).

With solid base-running in the top of the third, first-year right fielder Hayley DiMase (Eastvale, CA) turned a huge triple down the right-field line into an infield home run that allowed two more runs to touch home for the Bulldogs' 4-0 lead.

Despite a run from the Regals in the bottom of the third, the Maroon and Gray escaped the inning with the bases loaded to prevent any more damage. The Bulldogs then loaded the bases themselves, which led to four consecutive runs, including one from junior left fielder Jaci Sanchez (Lakewood, CA) on a well-placed double to score first-year first baseman Tyesen Gordon (Lathrop, CA) for Redlands' 7-1 lead. With two outs on the board, Siegel doubled up the middle and advanced to third on the throw, which allowed first-year right fielder Kayla Rivas (Whittier, CA) to score the Bulldogs' eighth run.

Redlands sealed it with two more runs in the top of the sixth to force the 10-run rule in an 11-3 victory.

Junior pitcher Nicole Stanzione (San Marcos, CA) pitched effectively for all six innings to earn the win, as she relied on her defense to minimize the Regals' chances. In addition, the Bulldogs recorded seven stolen bases in a fine display on the base paths.

Smith went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI, as Siegel earned a 2-for-4 showing with an RBI as well.

In the second game, Gordon hit a double to deep left field to push across the first run of the game. On the next play, Sanchez got a hold of her first triple of the season to help gain a 3-1 Bulldog advantage after three innings.

On a lineout to center field in the top of the fifth, senior second baseman Julianne Rodriguez (Thousand Oaks, CA) sped across home plate for Redlands' fourth run of the game.

The Maroon and Gray defense continued to back up senior pitcher Lindsey Mifsud (Belmont, CA) to keep the Regals off the board in a 4-1 win.

Rodriguez took advantage of her chances at the plate with a 3-for-4 clip and two runs, while Sanchez posted three RBI.

Redlands (8-12, 4-6 SCIAC) faces a quick turnaround by hosting Whittier College on Sunday, March 17, at 12 noon on the Field of Dreams.
