U of R Football Faces Tough Road Test with Claremont-M-S

Box Score

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands Football team saw their run for back-to-back Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships come to a close Saturday afternoon following a 42-0 loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Redlands looked to make it three wins in a row following victories over the University of La Verne and Pomona-Pitzer and were in position to at least have a share of the 2022 SCIAC Championship if they could pull off the win over the Stags and then grab a win over the Poets in the season finale.  The loss moves UR to 3-6, 3-2 SCIAC with two of those losses coming via the Stags.

The Bulldogs were held to just 96 yards of total offense with 49 coming through the air and another 47 on the ground.  They posted a 17% clip on third down efficiency  and ran just 48 plays, averaging 2.0 yards per play.  Turnovers proved costly for the Maroon and Grey as first-year Quarterback Tyler Tremain (Folsom, CA) lost a fumble and threw a pick-six, which led to 14 points for CMS.

Andrew Kellstrom (San Bernardino, CA) led the ground attack with 13 attempts for 57 yards with a long being for 16 yards.  Michael Mindnich (Bellingham, WA) was the top target for Tremain hauling in three catches for 13 yards, averaging 4.3 yards per catch.  Markelle Raymond (Lansing, MI) brought in a couple catches as well for a combined 12 yards and Aidan Shinfield (Studio City, CA), Evan Aguon (San Diego, CA), Graig Padgett (Steilacoom, WA), and Kellstrom combined for another four catches earning another 24 yards.

Vicente Garcia (Fontana, CA) finished with seven punts for a combined 332 yards, averaging 47.4 yards per punt with a long being for 54 yards.  Aguon totaled six kickoff returns for 116 yards, averaging 19.3 yards per return, which included a long run of 25 yards.

Defensively the Bulldogs totaled 87 tackles (29 Solo/58 Assisted), had a sack for a five-yard loss, four TFL's for a combined eleven yards lost and picked up a quarterback hit.  Craig Hunter (Murrieta, CA) led the unit finishing with nine tackles and helped on the sack.  Another five players totaled eight tackles each, coming from Elijah Valles (Oceanside, CA), Dre Owens (Pico Rivera, CA), Jacob Sega (Oceanside, CA), Derwin Johnson (Indio, CA), and Luke Purcella (University Place, WA)Jax Lee (Richland, WA) also had a strong game finishing with four tackles, assisted on a sack and added the QB hit.

The Bulldogs totaled 26:20 in Time of Possession and gave up just 14 points in the second half compared to 28 across the first 30:00 minutes.  Redlands' longest drive came early in the fourth quarter when they went 10-plays covering 50-yards, but it would stall when they would turn the ball over on downs.  Another strong drive came in the second quarter when they took possession for 4:23 going 33-yards in nine-plays, but this run would end with the pick-six, which was taken back 70-yards by the Stags.

Redlands has one final game on their 2022 schedule, which is next Saturday, November 12 when they welcome in Whittier College for Senior Day beginning at 1:05pm.
