REDLANDS, Calif. – On senior day the Bulldog Women's Soccer team (2-13-2, 2-8-2 SCIAC) was able to get out to an early lead in the first half thanks to a
Kelsey Williams (Murrieta, CA) goal that was assisted by
Sami Salinas (Foothill Ranch, CA), but a pair of late goals in the first 45 minutes allowed Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) to come back to win 2-1.
The Athenas came out aggressively with three early shots, including one that goalkeeper
Shannon Stewart (San Jose, CA) had to save in the eighth minute.
Salinas and
Julianna Ortega (Whittier, CA) each had shots, but in the 15
th minute Salinas found outside back Williams for the opening goal that connected cross cage in the upper 90 putting UR on top.
A series of shots from the 33
rd to the 35
th minute for the Athenas were unsuccessful as one missed wide, Stewart saved the second attempt, and the third was blocked by the defensive unit. CMS, however, equalized in the 40th minute. They then scored only a minute and 16 seconds later as they took the 2-1 lead which they would hold going into the half.
Out of the half Stewart started things off with another save, Salinas followed putting her first shot on target in the 57th minute, but it was handled by the Athena keeper.
In the 61
st minute Stewart made her fifth save of the day, which gave her 117 on the season, tying Hannah Menk for the most in single-season program history. Her sixth save of the day in the 74
th was the record breaking 118
th of the season, moving her into sole possession of first place.
Stewart finished with nine saves and brought her season save total to 121. Seniors
Kalysta Pallais (San Jose, CA) started and played 71 minutes while Ortega played the full 90.
26 of the 28 Bulldogs will return in 2024 as Redlands' season comes to an end.
