Kaegan Wherry posts match high 12 Kills as Bulldog Volleyball falls to Pomona-Pitzer

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Volleyball team (4-7, 1-5 SCIAC) lost in their return home to Currier Gym Tuesday evening as they fell in straight sets to Pomona-Pitzer 25-18, 25-23, 25-17.

The Bulldogs found themselves in an early hole after three errors to open the first set.  First-year Isabella Garey (Alexandria, VA) and Kiki Stradford (Mission Viejo, CA) each earned kills off Lyric Waterman (Aurora, CA) assists as they trailed 4-2.

A 5-2 run in the middle of the set allowed Redlands to come all the way back from their early deficit and tie the set at 11-11. Makaila Brooks (Las Vegas, NV) had a kill and an ace while Avery Aminoff (Alexandria, VA) added a kill off an Ella Goettsche (Eastvale, CA) feed.

The frame would remain tied shortly after until the Sagehens would go on to win 12 of the final 17 points as they took the set 25-18.

Redlands had their best performance in the second. The Bulldogs and Saghens were tied a few times to start but U of R was able to win three-straight to take a 6-3 lead following a pair of Pomona-Pitzer errors and a Kaegen Wherry (Englewood, CO) kill off a Waterman pass.

The set remained competitive with seven more ties through 28 points. After a quick 3-0 push by Pomona-Pitzer, Redlands responded with three-straight points to tie the set at 17-17.

Pomona-Pitzer reclaimed their three-point lead soon after, but the Bulldogs stayed alive with another three ties the last coming at 23-23. Pomona-Pitzer, however, finished the set off with the final two points as they went ahead 2-0.

Wherry opened the third with a kill off a Lali Makaiwi (Las Vegas, NV) assist as the Bulldogs took the first two points. The Bulldogs stay ahead by a point 6-5, but the Sagehens slowly took the lead right back and were up by three, 15-12. They would hold on to that lead as they finished the match on an 8-2 run.

Wherry finished with a game-high 12 kills and added 13 digs for a double-double. Makaiwi's 17 digs were also a game-high as she also had five assists. Goettsche tied for a game-high with 14 assists.

The Bulldogs will play their next four games on the road, starting with the University of La Verne this Friday, October 6 beginning at 7:00 p.m.
