Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

Redlands Men's Water Polo handles Caltech 19-6

REDLANDS, Calif. – The first place Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and No. 2 University of Redlands Men's Water Polo team (10-4, 3-0 SCIAC) experimented with their lineup in a 19-6 home win over the California Institute of Technology (CIT) at the Thompson Aquatic Center (TAC) Wednesday evening.

Andrew Higginson (San Diego, CA) got the scoring started only :28 seconds into the game and then made it 2-0 off a Dean Moody (Camarillo, CA) assist with 5:01 on the clock.

Just over a minute later Adam Lambert (St. Louis, MO) was set up by Tanner Whitson (St. Louis, MO) for the third Bulldog goal of the first quarter. The Beavers scored to cut the deficit to two, but the final two tallies of the first eight minutes came courtesy of Austin Galanski (Bakersfield, CA) and Curren McCarthy (San Clemente, CA) who were found by Callum Norman (Johannesburg, South Africa).

In the second quarter it was all Redlands as they shutout the Beavers and scored four times to extend their run from the first to 6-0. It was a slow start to the quarter as Spencer Sellwood's (Irvine, CA) goal did not come until the 4:45 mark. Higginson then added two more to give himself four in the first 12 minutes and Moody made it 9-1 at the half with his first. Galanski assisted on Moody's goal.

Owen Nishimura (Carlsbad, CA) scored first in the third and then Andrew Sorensen (Long Beach, CA) got in on the action with his opening goal with 4:50 on the clock in the third. The Beavers then ended their 15 plus minute scoring drought with a goal with 3:23 to play in the third.

Tanner Stagner (Laguna Niguel, CA), Ryan Brennen (Carmel Valley, CA), and Thomas Byrne (Boulder, CO) would all score within two minutes of each other as the lead grew to 12, 14-2, late in the third. Jack Everett (Westlake Village, CA) got the assist on Byrne's goal.

CIT ended the third with the final goal and started the fourth with the first as the score was 14-4 in the first two minutes of the final period.

The Bulldogs, however, ended on a 5-2 run to complete the win. Stagner, Dan Bajda (Lombard, Ill.), Brady Bumgardner (Laguna Beach, CA), McCarthy, and Byrne all scored with assists coming from Everett, Brennen, and Emerson Kropp (Denver, CO).

13 different Bulldogs scored with Higginson leading all scorers with four, all in the first half. Whitson and Everett each had two assists while Ron Gvishi (Kiryat Tivon, Israel) had three steals and an assist. In goal Troy Barker (Roseville, CA) made 10 saves for a .625 save percentage as he got the win.

Just like last week, Redlands will go from mid-week SCIAC action to a weekend tournament, this time down in Riverside as they play in the CBU Lancer Joust with two games on Friday and two more on Saturday. Their tournament starts with No. 16 Santa Clara University at 12:50 p.m. and then Fresno Pacific University at 4:50 p.m. on Friday, October 6.
