LOS ANGELES – The University of Redlands Men's Soccer team (12-3-3) lost 3-0 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament Final at Occidental College Saturday night as they were unable to get past the Tigers in their third matchup of the season.
The Bulldogs got off to a great start as they won a corner in the first minute and then put the first shot of the game on target as
Yusef Mayet (Redondo Beach, CA) had his shot saved by a Tiger defender.
Less than two minutes after that defensive save by Occidental, the Tigers would find the back of the net in the sixth minute with what would be the eventual game-winner.
Redlands continued to push forward, getting a shot on frame from
Cody Bell (Highland, CA) who had his attempt saved.
Phillip Kostenko (Redmond, WA) then had his header go wide to the left in the 13
th minute.
With the game still at 1-0, the Bulldogs defense made three defensive stops thanks to
Owen Jamieson (Danville, CA) and
Julian Weber (Haiku, HI) who kept another goal out of the back of the net in the span of :17 seconds.
Seth Lawrence (Redlands, CA) then made two saves in the final minute and a half as the Bulldogs made it to the break only down one.
Out of the half the Tigers forced Lawrence into another save opportunity less than two minutes in. Then things started to settle down over the next five minutes before Occidental hit the crossbar on another look.
Skylar Darwen (Los Angeles, CA) got the Bulldogs a try on goal in the 60th minute as his shot would go wide left. Bell then had his second look of the game saved in the 63
rd as UR pushed for the equalizer.
Spencer Palmer (San Diego, CA) in the 65
th minute got free for a shot that forced another save from the Oxy keeper. The best sequence, though, for the Bulldogs to get back into it was in the 72
nd and 73
rd minutes when
Jarette Barajas (San Jose, CA), Jamieson, and
Anders Beckton (Seattle, WA) unleashed a trio of looks on goal, all of which were blocked by field players.
Occidental added insurance in the 77th coming on a corner kick that was side volleyed from Diego Cavalie.
Lawrence, Jameison, and
Erik Davies (Snoqualmie, WA) all kept the game alive with saves down 2-0, but in the 84
th the Tigers would put the game away with their third.
The Bulldogs were outshot 16-11 and the two sides combined for 22 shots on goal as the defenses made 19 combined saves. Redlands also held the corner advantage 8-2.
Redlands will now wait and see if they earn an At-Large bid into the NCAA Division III National Championships, with the selection show occurring on Monday, November 6 beginning at 11:00am. The Bulldogs finish the year with 12 wins, eight of which came within conference play. They posted the most regular season wins since 2021 when they won 17. This was also the sixteenth-straight SCIAC Tournament appearance for the Maroon and Grey. They have now earned a spot in the SCIAC Postseason every year since its inception.
The coaching staff will have to replace five of their six All-SCIAC players, including the SCIAC Offensive Athlete of the Year Barajas. 24 of their 52 goals and 18 of their 34 assists are graduating including goalkeeper Lawrence.
