Carly Hicks ties program record with seven made threes in overtime win at Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Basketball team (4-4, 1-1 SCIAC) pulled out a road win against Chapman University 69-65 in overtime Saturday evening as the Bulldogs picked up their first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) win of the season. The Bulldogs were led by the career-high of 23 points from Carly Hicks (Portland, OR) as her seven made threes tied the single-game program record.

In the opening five minutes of the game the Bulldogs trailed by five, 9-4, but Colbi Zorich (Kenmore, WA) made a layup and Hicks made a three after Aliyah Anderson (Oceanside, CA) grabbed a steal as the game was tied at nine with 3:49 left in the opening quarter.

After Zorich made a free throw with 2:33 on the clock, Redlands took the lead 10-9, but it was followed by a 6-2 Chapman run that ended the first period putting UR down three, 15-12.

The Bulldogs were able to regain the lead in the second quarter when AJ Wick (Henderson, NV) found Hicks for another three as UR led just over a minute into the quarter. Then with 2:23 left in the half Anderson scored in the paint, but those would be the final points of the half for Redlands as they trailed at the break, 26-24.

Hicks' excellent shooting continued to carry the Bulldogs' offense in the second half as their first six points came off her threes as they jumped ahead by two, 30-28, with 7:38 on the clock in the third. Redlands would finish the quarter by scoring four of the final six points taking a four point lead, 44-40, after 30 minutes as Anderson and Wick scored inside with Avery Shiring (Yorba Linda, CA) picking up an assist on Wick's bucket.

Zorich and Shiring each scored the first points of the fourth as the Maroon and Grey led by their largest margin of the game, eight, 48-40. The Panthers, though, scored the next eight points as the game was tied at 48. After another tie at 50, Redlands would hold a three-point lead with seven seconds remaining in the game thanks to Shiring who hit one of two free-throws. But the next possession for Chapman they would come down and force OT as they would knock down a triple deadlocking the game at 57-57.

In the five-minute extra period Zorich found Hicks for another made three only :16 seconds into the frame and the Bulldogs would not relinquish the advantage as they would convert on seven of their 10 free throws down the stretch.

Joining Hicks with a career game was Shiring who had a career-high 21 points (9-15 FG, 3-4 FT). Anderson had a great all-around game with 13 points (3-6 FG, 7-8 FT), eight assists, and eight rebounds. The eight assists are a new career-high.

Redlands will return to non-conference play with a match-up against the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Tuesday, December 19 beginning at 5:00 p.m. inside Currier Gym.
