Bulldog Men's Soccer defeats defending SCIAC Champions Chapman on the road

ORANGE, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Soccer team (4-0, 1-0 SCIAC) opened Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play Wednesday afternoon with a huge 2-1 win on the road against the 2022 defending SCIAC Regular Season Champions, Chapman University thanks to a pair of penalty kicks from Jarette Barajas (San Diego, CA) and Spencer Palmer (San Diego, CA).

The Bulldogs received the first shot of the game courtesy of Phillip Kostenko (Redmond, WA) who forced a save in the fifth minute as he looked to beat the keeper on the ground to his right.

Barajas then had a shot saved in the 33rd minute as his attempt was handled keeping the game deadlocked. Three minutes later Barajas would step up and convert on a penalty to make it 1-0 through 36 minutes.

In the final :33 seconds of the first half the Panthers tried to pull even with a shot at the bottom right corner of the goal, but starting goalkeeper Brady Bachman (San Diego, CA) would come up with a huge stop.

The Bulldogs defense stood strong to begin the second 45 as they did not allow a shot for the first 27 minutes and in their first three attempts they picked up their second goal, which came in the 62nd minute off another PK, this time from Palmer.

After a pair of yellow cards, Chapman pulled within one in the 77th minute converting on a corner kick. Despite giving up that goal the UR defense only forced Bachman to make one more save the rest of the way as the Bulldogs would pick up the win keeping their record unblemished at 4-0, 1-0 SCIAC.

It was a very even match with each team taking eight shots and finding their target four times. They also tied with three corner kicks apiece, while Redlands was called for 17 of the 32 fouls. One notable difference was the yellow cards where the Bulldogs had four of the five.

Before their run of rivals continues with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps next Wednesday, September 20, the Bulldogs travel to Vanguard University this Saturday, September 16 with kickoff set for 4:00 p.m.
