REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands women's volleyball team (3-2) cruised to a sweep over West Coast Baptist College (WCBC) Friday evening inside Currier Gym.
After losing the opening point to the Eagles, the Bulldogs won the next three thanks to three WCBC errors one of which came thanks to an assisted block from
Avery Aminoff and
Lilia Donaldson.
The first kill of the match for Redlands was a
Lyric Waterman assisted, Donaldson kill that made it 5-3. That kill was the first point of a 16-5 run that expanded the lead to 13, 21-8. During the run
Kiki Stradford picked up a pair of kills and Aminoff and
Makaila Brooks combined on a block.
Redlands won four of the final five points to take set number one 25-12.
The Bulldogs used their first set momentum to jump out to a 7-1 lead in the second as Brooks had two kills and a service ace while
Kaegen Wherry and
Ella Goettsche added a kill apiece.
Shelby Dawson fed Stradford for a kill that made it a 10-point lead, 20-10. Dawson then added an ace as her serving got the Bulldogs within two points of the first set, 23-10. A pair of errors from the Eagles sealed the set win 25-14.
The first two sets were very clean for the Redlands as WCBC committed a lot of errors, many unforced, but in the third they won five of the first seven points. The Bulldogs, however, responded with a 9-3 run to take the lead. Donaldson and Wherry each had kills with
Bella Thornbury adding an assist and
Lali Makaiwi getting the Bulldogs two free points thanks to a pair of aces.
The Bulldogs slowly built on their lead as they extended it to seven, 23-16. The Eagles, though, did not concede easily as they won seven-straight and took their first lead, 24-23, of the set since they held an 8-7 advantage.
Paige Sugg was subbed in and she collected a kill off a Waterman assist to save set point and Makaiwi had an ace and Brooks ended the match with a kill.
Stradford and Wherry tied for a team-high with six kills as they hit .333 and .417 respectively.
