Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

U of R Women's Volleyball wins five-set thriller to open Cox era

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Volleyball team started their first season with new Head Coach Savannah Cox on Saturday afternoon inside Currier Gym. The Bulldogs had a battle on their hands as they beat Providence Christian College (PCC) in five sets with the first four sets being decided by three points or fewer and two of them requiring more than 25 points to be won.

In the first set the Bulldogs got behind 8-4 before drawing within one, 12-11 following Kills for Paige Sugg (Federal Way, Wash.) and Avery Aminoff (Alexandria, Va.).

The set looked like the Sea Beggars would take the opening set as they extend their lead to six, 18-12, but the Bulldogs won 14 of the final 20 points, including six-straight after facing set-point, 24-20. During that 6-0 run Kiki Stradford (Mission Viejo, Calif.), Sugg, and Aminoff had kills and Ella Goettsche (Eastvale, Calif.) had a service ace.

The second set started the opposite way as Redlands started fast with a quick three-point lead, 4-1. Things tightened up the rest of the way as the two teams were tied at five, seven, 13, 14, and 18 before PCC won seven of the last 11 points to even the match at a set apiece.

The Bulldogs were undeterred from a bad end to the second as they jumped out to a 7-3 lead after Sugg and Lilia Donaldson (Boulder, Colo.) had kills and Lali Makaiwi (Las Vegas) had two aces.

Much like the second, though, PCC made a comeback, this time it was a 7-0 run to go from down four to up three, 10-7. After three errors from the Sea Beggars, the game was tied at 10.

Despite the quick response the Bulldogs were down until 20 points later when they tied the game at 20. Following ties of 21 and 22, the Bulldogs finished off a 9-4 run to draw within a set of a 1-0 record.

The fourth set gave the fans a fourth-straight thriller as the set saw ties of two, three, seven, 11, 22, 23, and 24, but ultimately a late 4-1 run for PCC forced a fifth set.

For the first time all match one side took advantage of their early lead as the Bulldogs used kills from Sugg, Aminoff, Makaila Brooks (Las Vegas) to take a six point lead, 9-3, in the first to 15 set.  The Sea Beggars did get with three, but the Bulldogs closed out their season-opener with a 15-7 fifth set.

Head Coach Savannah Cox on the win and Bulldog women's volleyball, "I'm so proud of our team and the resilience that they showed in today's match. All 22 players played an important role in today's victory. Our bench controlled the energy in the gym the entire match. We played with a contagious confidence that was inspiring, especially given the fact we played five freshmen. We are looking forward to restoring the pride in being a Bulldog women's volleyball player."

Leading the Bulldog offense was Sugg who had a career-high 21 kills and added six digs and two blocks. Brooks was the most efficient Bulldogs as she opened her collegiate career with 12 kills and a .455 hitting percentage. Running the offense was sophomore's Goettsche and Lyric Waterman (Aurora, Colo.) who each had 23 assists. For Goettsche it's a career-high and one off the career-high for Waterman.

The Bulldogs' time of the west coast will be short following this game as they prepare to fly to Massachusetts for three matches at Smith College with the first of those coming on Friday, September 8 at 2:00 p.m. against Westfield State University.
