LA VERNE, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Water Polo team (6-3, 1-0 SCIAC) stayed undefeated against Division III teams as they won their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opener at the University of La Verne (ULV) 18-6.
The Bulldogs took complete control of the game in the first six minutes as they scored the first five goals with
Spencer Clinton,
Alec Abrahamian (Glendale, CA),
Spencer Sellwood (Irvine, CA),
Ron Gvishi (Kiryat, Israel), and
Callum Norman (Johannesburg, South Africa) all getting on the scorer's sheet.
Dean Moody (Camarillo, CA) had an assist on Abrahamian's goal.
After allowing the final goal of the first quarter to the Leopards, Abrahamian got his second :21 seconds into the second quarter.
ULV got a goal back at the 6:07 mark but
Max Wagener (Piedmont, CA) and Moody each responded with goals of their own only :37 seconds apart as the lead was six, 8-2.
Over the final 2:11 of the first half
Aidan Murphy (Placentia, CA) became the eighth different Bulldog to score and then Abrahamian got his hat trick as Redlands went into the half up seven, 10-3.
After a great defensive first half, the Leopards scored the first two goals of the second half as they drew within five, 10-5, with 4:58 still to play in the third.
Enduring a scoring drought of 8:41, the Bulldogs extended their lead to seven, 12-5, as they headed to the fourth following two late third quarter tallies from Gvishi and Clinton, bringing their totals to two.
The two goals to end the third started a 7-0 run to seal the victory as UR extended their advantage to 12, 17-5, in the final three minutes of the game.
Owen Nishimura (Carlsbad, CA) and
Tanner Whitson (St. Louis, MO) each got their first goals during the run.
As a team the Bulldogs outshot the Leopards by 17 (42-25), had a shooting percentage of .429 in comparison to the .240 for ULV. A lone area of concern was the 10 exclusions that allowed three power-play goals, though, two of them came in the third when the lead was seven.
In goal the junior transfer
Roberto Barrera (Guanajuato, Mexico) played the full 32 minutes and made seven saves with a steal as he saved 53.8 percent of the shots on target.
The next game on the schedule is a SCIAC home matchup with Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday, September 27 at 7:00 p.m. at the Thompson Aquatic Center.
