Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

No. 2 Redlands Men's Water Polo beats No. 3 Pomona-Pitzer for their third-straight win of the series

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands No. 2 men's water polo team (7-3, 2-0) beat No.3 Pomona-Pitzer 9-7 inside the Thompson Aquatic Center (TAC) Wednesday evening as all nine of their goals came in the first and third quarters.

The Bulldogs offense got on the board first at the 6:25 mark of the first as Andrew Higginson scored off a Spencer Sellwood assist. After holding the Sagehens scoreless for more than three minutes to open the game, they were able to equalize with 4:18 on the clock.

The Bulldogs then took a strangle hold on the game as Dean Moody converted on a penalty 1:16 after the Pomona-Pitzer goal, Ron Gvishi was set up by Andrew Sorensen 28 seconds later, and finally Alec Abrahamian made it four different Bulldog scorers in the first as Higginson added an assist to his goal and the Bulldogs led 4-1 after eight minutes of play.

The Sagehens defense tightened in the second quarter, holding the Bulldogs scoreless for the first entire period while scoring the two lone goals to make it a one-goal halftime lead.

Coming out of half Redlands regained their three-goal lead as Gvishi netted his second at the 6:24 mark, as did Higginson 29 seconds later to make it 6-3.

After a goal was pulled back with still 3:51 left in the third, Owen Nishimura scored 33 seconds later thanks to a Sellwood assist. Higginson then got his hat trick with what would be the game-winning goal. Aidan Murphy scored his first of the game to pad the lead further as it was a 9-4 lead heading into the fourth.

A pair of Sagehen goals made it a three-goal game with 2:50 to play, but the Bulldogs offense used their full 30 seconds possessions to pull off the 9-7 win.

Higginson tied for a game-high with four points (three goals, one assist) and overall, six different Bulldogs scored. In goal Roberto Barrera had a good evening with seven saves and a .500 save percentage.

The Bulldogs will play their final game before the Gary Troyer Tournament this weekend as they host Ottawa (Arizona) tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. inside the TAC.
