REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands men's basketball team (11-5, 3-4 SCIAC) beat the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) 114-61 behind 27 made threes on Wednesday evening inside Currier Gym.
Sam Abere (Lake Oswego, OR) started the game off with two threes both coming off Jhace Boston (Bakersfield, CA)) assists as the Bulldogs started the game off on a 14-0 run, while holding the Beavers scoreless for the first five plus minutes. Robert Power (Pacific Palisades, CA) then connected from long range and added a fastbreak layup and Pharaoh Amadi (Dallas, TX) hit his first of many threes during the run.
At the 9:46 mark Redlands finished off a 10-0 run and led by 30, 36-6. Those final ten points came from Neil Owens (Pasadena, CA) and Josh Himel (Jacksonville, FL) who both started the run with three-pointers thanks to Abere assists and Owens and Amadi who had the final four points.
The largest lead of the half came with 5:38 remaining after Ivan Belkin (Encino, CA)) who found Himel for a three pointer that pushed the margin to 33, 48-15.
The Beavers would right the ship more over the last five minutes as the Bulldogs would take a 58-32 lead into the break.
After Caltech scored three of the first four points to begin the second half, Owens made a jumper on a fast break followed quickly by Power, Amadi, and Malachi Miller (Modesto, CA) who all converted from behind the arc to extend the lead to 34, 71-37.
In the second half overall Amadi made six-of-eight three-pointers as he scored 18 points in a career night.
Amadi led five players in double figures with a career-high 27 points (9-15 FG, 8-14 3FG, 1-1 FT), while adding six rebounds and two assists. The other four players with double-digits were Himel and Owens with 15 points, Abere with 12, and Power with 11.
As a team the Bulldogs had great ball movement with 31 assists on 39 made field goals. The 31 assists tie for the 15th most in a single game in the country this season. Boston led the way with a career-high six assists.
Redlands also made 27 threes, which are the second most in a single game behind the 40 that Grinnell College made last Friday.
The Bulldogs will head to the University of La Verne this Saturday, January 20 for an afternoon game that tips off at 2:00 p.m.
