Redlands Football falls at Pomona-Pitzer on late field goal

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands Football team (1-4, 1-2 SCIAC) scored on a 20-yard touchdown pass by Jayden Mckey (Tracy, CA) to Cal Breen (Bainbridge Island, WA) for an early 7-0 lead, but those would be the lone points put up by the Maroon and Grey as they would fall 10-7 at Pomona-Pitzer.

The Bulldogs received the opening kickoff and marched right down the field scoring a touchdown on a 12-play, 75-yard drive that included a 14-yard reception by Taylor Bowie (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA), a 14-yard rush by Calel Olicia-Aramboles (Westfield, IN), and then the 20-yard catch for Breen.

Late in the first quarter the Sagehens took advantage of a fumble recovery at the Redlands 22 scoring four plays later to tie it at seven.

The best drive after the touchdown for the Bulldogs started in the final 2:32 of the third quarter when Mckey connected for a 45-yard pass on 3rd and 6 with Breen.

At the start of the fourth they were at the Sagehen 12 with a 2nd and 8 and threatening. But the Bulldogs would go on to rush for no gain and then added a completion to Breen for seven yards, making it 4th and 1.

With the chance to take the lead, the short field goal was missed and Pomona-Pitzer would take over at their own five with 13:30 left in the game.

Laurence Williams (Corona, CA) and the defense stepped up once again this time intercepting a pass at the Bulldog 32 stopping the Sagehens in their tracks and getting the ball back for the offense.

The proceeding possession, however, would end with a 41-yard Aidan Petruescu (La Habra, CA) punt. Pomona-Pitzer on their very next drive would take it down the field and would have a field-goal opportunity but it would be missed, turning the ball over to the Bulldog offense at their own 20 with 1:26 on the clock.

Following an incompletion the Sagehens forced an interception on a pass intended for Breen regaining possession with 1:15 to play and the ball on the Bulldog 30.

On the sixth play of the Pomona-Pitzer drive they walked the game off with a game-winning field goal as time expired.

Olicia-Aramboles finished with 91 yards rushing on 21 carries. Breen had a career-high 82 yards on five catches and a touchdown.

On defense Redlands once again proved tough, holding the Sagehens to 3.5 yards per rush, 3.2 yards per pass, and only 3.3 yards per play.

Craig Hunter (Murrieta, CA) and Williams both had 10 total tackles. Hunter also had a tackle for loss (TFL) and Williams with an interception. Jaeden Thorn (Seattle, WA) had a career day with seven tackles, three TFL's, and a sack. Aaron Muniz (Fontana, CA) made six stops with three going for a loss.

Redlands remains on the road as they head to California Lutheran University on Saturday, October 19 beginning at 7:00 p.m. as the two sides play for the Smudge Pot Trophy.
