REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Water Polo team (7-10, 3-0 SCIAC) took down Whittier College 11-7 in a low-scoring, physical game at the Thompson Aquatic Center (TAC) Saturday morning.
In the first quarter Nicolas Fedotov (Miami Beach, FL) scored off a Ron Gvishi assist at the 2:11 mark as it was only 1-0 after the first eight minutes.
The Poets tied it in the first minute of the second period before Callum Norman (Johannesburg, South Africa) converted on a penalty with 4:18 to play. Whitter responded with a penalty of their own just over a minute later.
Whitter was the first team to score back-to-back goals as they took a 3-2 lead after their prior penalty. This advantage would not hold, though, as Fedotov scored the Bulldogs' second 5-meter penalty to tie it at three just before the break.
Both sides traded goals to begin the third before Gvishi found Max Wagener (Piedmont, CA) to keep the game deadlocked. Wagener then made it two in-a-row with a converted penalty as the Bulldogs held their first lead, 6-5, since the early part of the second quarter.
Heading to the fourth Redlands was up by one, 8-7, thanks to goals from Owen Nishimura (Carlsbad, CA) and Gvishi.
Over the final ten minutes the Poets were held scoreless as the Bulldogs put the game away with three unanswered goals from Norman and two from Spencer Clinton (Cypress, CA).
Gvishi had a goal, three assists, three drawn exclusions, and four steals. Norman had his best game of the season with two goals, one assist, and a steal. Fedotov added three goals, the joint game-high total and got it done defensively with three drawn exclusions and two steals.
Roberto Barrera (Guanajuato, Mexico) had a big day in net with a .500 save percentage, seven saves, and a steal.
Next up will be No. 2 Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday, October 16 at 7:00 p.m. inside the Thompson Aquatic Center.
