PASADENA, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Soccer team eased past California Institute of Technology (Caltech) 3-1 on Wednesday afternoon as Phillip Kostenko added another brace on the season with his ninth and 10th goals helping the Bulldogs improve to 10-2-3, 7-1-2 SCIAC. They are also 6-0-1 in the month of October.
The opening goal came from Cody Bell (Highland, CA) who was fed by Kostenko. Bell dribbled inside from the right and combined with Kostenko for a one-two and then poked the ball past the keeper from inside 16-yards.
Eight minutes later Kostenko made it 2-0 getting fed by Owen Jamieson (Danville, CA). Jamieson served a perfect driven ball from the left side for Kostenko who flicked it into the back side of goal.
Making the start in goal for the Maroon and Grey was Jason Salmeron (Winnetka, CA) who was not tested in the opening 45:00 minutes. Then in the second half within the first seven minutes he was called upon to make his first stop.
In the 76th minute Kostenko scored for the 10th time this season, which now gives him 24 career goals, putting him one behind Sam Mirkovich (2001-2004) for 13th in program history. He is also one of 20 players in school history to join the 15-goal and 10-assist club.
On that goal it extended the lead to 3-0. Anders Beckton (Seattle, WA) dribbled into the box from the left side and got past a defender before sliding the ball across the six-yard box for Kostenko who had a tap in finish.
Salmeron would make one more save in the 79th as he kept the shutout intact. The Beavers, though, did get one back in the 89th as it finished 3-1 Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs took 22 shots for the game with 12 shots on goal. They also added four corner kicks.
