REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Soccer team (7-8-1, 3-7 SCIAC) fell 3-1 to the University of La Verne Wednesday night in the second match-up between the two sides in a week.
It was all Bulldogs in the opening twenty minutes as they held a 4-1 shot advantage and had three corner kicks.
The first look of the game came in the third minute when Natalie Turiace (San Dimas, CA) had an attempt saved. Then in the sixth Gianna Alati (Lake Oswego, OR) tried from distance but it was also handled by the ULV keeper.
Turiace took a corner, which turned into a shot for Elena Pinto (Kent, WA) in the penalty box, but it got blocked in the middle, never making it on frame.
Shannon Stewart (San Jose, CA) came up with her first save of the game in the 29th as the Leopards had their fourth-straight unanswered look. Stewart would again make a stop in the 33rd as the Leopards started to stretch the defense.
Following a lull of about seven minutes where Jersey Babb's (Littleton, CO) long distance look was the only shot attempt for the Maroon and Grey, Stewart was again called upon in goal. She made a save on a shot in the box, but the rebound would fall to a Leopard who took advantage putting away the second chance opportunity for a 1-0 lead in the 40th.
Trailing 1-0 at the half it was the Leopards who got the first look on goal in the second period as Stewart was sure-handed and made the save.
Seconds later Sabrina Semmere (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) came the other way and put her attempt on target, but it was once again stopped by the Leopard keeper.
Then in the 55th La Verne scored the eventual game-winning goal on a through ball that put an attacker in a 1v1 situation with Stewart.
Redlands continued their attack with Turiace taking a shot in the box, which was blocked. The ricochet would go to Semmere on the right side of the six-yard box and she smashed it home to bring the U of R within one, 2-1, in the 66th minute.
The comeback was short lived, though, as La Verne took an ensuing cornerkick winning the header in the box before sending a shot past a sliding Stewart inside the near post.
The last dangerous look for Redlands came from Caprial Loescher (Portland, OR) in the 82nd forced one final save by the ULV keeper.
Redlands completes non-conference play in their final regular season home game this Saturday, October 26 on Homecoming as they host UC Santa Cruz on senior day beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Farquhar Field.
