No. 13 La Verne proves tough test for Redlands Women's Volleyball

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Volleyball team (8-11, 4-8 SCIAC) fell in straight sets to No. 27 University of La Verne inside inside Currier Gym Tuesday night.

Following a weekend sweep against California Lutheran University on the road, the Bulldogs looked like they were poised for a strong effort against the Leos as Makenna Van Hofwegen (Buckeye, AZ) found Kaegan Wherry (Englewood, CO) and Avery Aminoff (Alexandria, VA) for an early 2-1 lead.

A few points later, trailing by two, Lyric Waterman (Aurora, CO) found Emma Murphy (South Jordan, UT) for a pair of kills as it was all tied at four.

La Verne then looked like they would pull away, leading 12-7, but a quick 4-0 Redlands run made it a one-point set, 12-11. The surge would be the final time the set was competitive as the Leopards won 13 of the next 18 points to go in front 1-0.

The Bulldogs continued to attack to begin the second set, holding a 6-4 lead after scoring five of six points thanks to kills from Wherry, Esha Ball (Fresno, CA), and Elizabeth Moyer (Surprise, AZ).

After a La Verne service error it was only a one-point deficit, 10-9, but the Leopards would again win the set with a strong performance in the middle going in front 2-0.

In the third it was all Leopards as they went up 4-0, 10-4, and 12-5.  But with a Wherry kill at 18-9, the Bulldogs made it slightly more competitive with a 4-1 run that brought them within five, 19-14.

The run would be too little, too late as La Verne would take the set 25-18 handing the Bulldogs their seventh straight loss.

Ball, Aminoff, and Makaila Brooks (Las Vegas, NV) each had a block. while Lali Makaiwi (Las Vegas, NV), Moyer, and Wherry were in double figures in digs.

Redlands now plays in Lancaster at West Coast Baptist College on Thursday, October 31 at 6:00 p.m. as they look to right the ship before their final four Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) matches.
