REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Volleyball team (8-4, 4-1 SCIAC) swept California Lutheran University (CLU) Saturday afternoon inside Currier Gym for their first win against the Regals since 2009. It's also their first 4-1 start since that 2009 season when they began Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play 8-1 winning the program's only SCIAC Championship Title.
It was all Bulldogs in the first set leading 5-1 thanks to kills from Kaegan Wherry (Englewood, CO), Avery Aminoff (Alexandria, VA), and Makaila Brooks (Las Vegas, NV). Elizabeth Moyer (Surprise, AZ) also had a service ace during the early run.
After the quick start to the first set, it would then become tied on six different occasions before Redlands would take a tied match at 14-14 and finish things off on an 11-5 run as Aminoff finished off the set with the final two kills and an assisted block to help secure the 25-19 win.
After a great finish to the first, the script was flipped by the Regals in the second as they started the set on a 7-1 run. An ace from Wherry and Lali Makaiwi (Las Vegas, NV), though, were sandwiched between three Regal errors as it was a one-point set, 8-7.
Trailing by two, 9-7, Makenna Van Hofwegen (Buckeye, AZ) sparked an 8-2 run that included four kills for Wherry as they took control of the set leading 15-11.
The Bulldogs maintained this lead thanks to a string of three-straight service aces from Lyric Waterman (Aurora, CO) as they took set two, 25-16.
CLU led by as many as four in the first eight points of the third, but Redlands would take a 10-9 lead thanks to an Emma Murphy (South Jordan, UT) kill.
Up by four, the Bulldogs were only nine points away from a sweep, but the Regals would win three-straight making it a one-point set, 16-15.
Despite the constant pressure from CLU, the Bulldogs never relinquished their lead as they would pull off the stunner, 25-23.
Van Hofwegen finished with a double-double as she had 17 assists and 13 digs, Waterman had 12 assists as well. Wherry, Murphy, and Aminoff combined for 28 kills, which included a .471 hitting percentage mark for Murphy.
Another big test looms for Redlands' next Tuesday, October 8 at 7:00 p.m. when they travel to No. 14 University of La Verne.
